The Jordanian parliament on Monday urged the government to expel Israel's ambassador in Amman in response to "ongoing Israeli aggression" at holy sites in Jerusalem.

Amman is the official custodian of Jerusalem's holy Muslim sites and the parliamentary session followed an Israeli court ruling on the Al-Aqsa mosque compound.

On Sunday, a Jerusalem district court issued a temporary injunction ordering the immediate closure of the Bab al-Rahma building on Jerusalem's holy Temple Mount site.

Tensions have erupted recently amidst a dispute between Israel and Muslim worshipers over the status of the Bab al-Rahma ("Gate of Mercy") structure within the Al-Aqsa mosque complex, which was closed off by Israel in 2003 over alleged ties between the Islamic society operating there and the Gaza-based terrorist group Hamas.

The Jerusalem magistrates court ruled that the building should be closed while the case continues and gave the site's administrator --the Islamic Waqf organization-- 60 days to respond to the court case.

Police had requested the Muslim prayer area to be temporarily closed until the main case regarding the opening of the structure was heard by the court.

There have in recent weeks been scuffles between Palestinian worshippers and Israeli police at the site over the use of the side building.

Palestinian worshipers have been entering the site and praying there despite an Israeli order that it should stay closed.

The Jordanian Foreign Ministry spoke out to condemn the Israeli decision, releasing a statement that said East Jerusalem, including the Al-Aqsa compound, "is in territory occupied in 1967, which is not under Israeli jurisdiction."

Lawmakers on Monday called on the Jordanian government to address the UN Security Council about "stopping Israeli violations and protecting the Palestinian people."

During the same session, MP Khalil Atiya stood up to salute the perpetrator of the attack that killed two Israelis near the West Bank settlement of Ariel on Sunday. According to local media reports, there was a small applause from other parliamentarians in response.

Jordan is the only Arab country apart from Egypt to have a peace deal with Israel. But the treaty is overwhelmingly opposed by Jordanians, more than half of whom are of Palestinian origin.

As well as being the third-holiest site in Islam, the larger compound is also the location of Judaism's most sacred spot.

Al-Aqsa mosque compound is located in East Jerusalem, which came under Israeli control in 1967, in an annexation not recognized by the international community at large.

Israel views the entire city of as its capital, while the Palestinians view the eastern sector -- where key holy sites for Christians, Muslims and Jews are located -- as the capital of their future state.
