What's new

Japan's automakers have a made-in-China sales crisis, Total sales of Japanese auto brands in China down 32% year-on-year

combustion engines cars are also easy to make, they are not rocket science, besides, Electric cars are not cheap.

Making combustion engines is easy, but making the most competitive combustion engines competing with those from the market leader is the most difficult one. There is why if China stay in CE it will take longer time to compete with those from Japan in term of performance.

.
Japan, especially Toyota, is supposed to be the leader in EVs.

Does everyone still remember Toyota Prius?

But suddenly it feels like they heavy-heartily enter the EV market.

The great, highly creative, and hard-working Japanese people suddenly become impotent.

I don't know what is the big reason behind it.

Japanese cars will be crushed just like Japanese smartphones and electronics.

And now... for Japan to catch the EV market leader, which is China and Tesla, is not an easy task.

Maybe most of the Japanese leaders right now are facing a tall wall.

Maybe that is why Japan feels hard-heartly to enter the EV market.

But then why even Vietnam is able to make an EV car???

The same.

Making EV car is not so difficult, but making competitive EV car is the most difficult.

I am not sure how competitive is Vinvest in the global market.

The reson that Japanese auto makers lack behind Chinese and Tesla is mainly due to them investing heavily on hydrogen powered cars instead of EV. Looks like they are betting on the wrong horse and have to pay heavy prices.

Vietnamese EV cars are basically re-badged cars with European technology and Chinese batteries. Vinfast cars spent tons of dollars on advertising their re-badged BMW cars but sadly their sales in 2022 and 2023 are very disappointing.

I got this answer from Bing AI chatbot:-
According to an article on Just Auto, despite overall Vietnamese Light Vehicle sales surging by 24% year-on-year in 2022, VinFast sales plunged by 32% year-on-year from around 36k units in 2021 to just 24k units in 2022. VinFast’s January 2023 sales were only 358 units, a drop of 83% year-on-year from 2k units in January 2022.

Indian is also investing and betting on Hydrogen.

They are trying to make Hidrogen based Submarine engine while Naval Group from France is betting on Lithium Ion submarine engine.

China has lot of Lithium and this is why China Lithium based battery is progressing as they have one of the most important material in Lithium based Battery (despite the majority material needed are Nickel)

As the number of applications has increased, so have the types of lithium-ion batteries. One may be designed to be cheaper, another to hold more energy, and a third to recharge more quickly.

Although we often talk in general terms about EV batteries, different models and brands use different types, equivalent to the difference between a V8 performance engine and an economical four-cylinder.

Standard-range EVs, for instance, use a lithium-ion battery with a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) chemistry, while longer-range vehicles tend to use nickel-cobalt-aluminium, or nickel-cobalt-manganese.

The main measure of how much energy a battery holds is its specific energy, which is measured in watt-hours per kilogram.

Most EV batteries have a specific energy of under 300Wh/kg.

CATL says its new battery almost doubles that figure, with a specific energy of 500Wh/kg.

the problem is Lexus is losing it's share. after certain point people don't care about reliability especially after $60K point.
Every car above $50k is for the 5 percent. Those buyers have other priorities.
