KARACHI: The government of Japan plans to provide grants to the Pakistan government for developing solar energy and loans for hydropower projects to overcome its energy crisis, Tomoyasu Fukuchi, consulting engineer of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), said.
In a meeting with Zubair Motiwala, chairman of Sindh Board of Investment, and other officials on Thursday, Fukuchi, who is heading a team of JICA, said they were visiting Pakistan to collect data on alternative energy sector.
“The JICA team will collect detailed information on progress with regard to the alternative energy sector, as Japan intends to provide grants and loans. Japan will provide loans to private investors for solar and hydropower projects,” he told.
He also said that three Japanese companies, namely Fuji, Hitachi and Mitsubishi were manufacturing wind turbines.
Motiwala suggested the Japanese delegation to give recommendations in the survey report on how to improve the living standard of people residing in the wind corridor.
He also briefed the delegation on Thar coalfield and other alternate energy projects undertaken by the government.
SBI Director General Muhammad Riazuddin suggested the Japanese delegation to install a pilot project of wind turbine so that local investors could be given knowledge about its performance.
