Japan's major oil wholesalers are preparing to suspend crude oil imports from Iran in October, amid fears Washington will sanction countries importing Iranian crude, local media reported.

Japanese oil companies are preparing to halt imports of Iranian crude and researching ways to increase imports from elsewhere to make up the shortfall, the reports said.

US President Donald Trump in May pulled out of a 2015 nuclear deal with Iran and last month began reimposing sanctions that block other countries from trading with Iran.

A second phase of sanctions targeting Iran's crucial oil industry and banking sector will be reinstated on November 5.

Japan has been seeking a waiver that would allow it to continue importing Iranian oil, but it appears unlikely to win one, Jiji Press agency and other local media reported in recent days.

A trade ministry official on Monday confirmed Japan had raised the issue of a waiver in talks with Washington but declined to comment further.

Oil importers declined to confirm they were contingency planning for a halt in Iranian imports.

Hope to see India up there soon! We shouldn’t buy even a single barrel of oil from the current regime.

Well there are some Japanese who do not like how their government is so dependent on the USA.
People should read this book: "The Japan That Can Say No: Why Japan Will Be First Among Equals" .

Although I have never read it, but it basically means that Japan should not be a pawn state of the USA.

Yes, I know there is a very strong internal movement in Japan to bring back its military, with offensive capabilities to defend ts rights in the South China Sea, especially since the US remains uninterested. North Korea lobbing nuclear missiles over Japan was another wake-up call for many Japanese to disassociate with America's policies which make them a target.

PM Shinzo Abe actually has made statements saying he will repeal the treaties which limit Japan's sovereign right to defend itself and also for a re-negotiation of its alliance with the US taking primarily Japan's security issues into account. However, these were only campaign slogans and propaganda to appease angry Japanese voters.

Okinawa Island, the site of a major US base, has seen continuous protests from locals for the periodic brutal kidnappings and rapes of Japanese teenagers by US soldiers. This has added a lot of pressure to the Japanese government.

This issue is not so one-sided. As the rest of the world shifts away from US hegemony, Japan also is considering new options, galvanized by strong domestic anti-American sentiment.

Japanese are a rich and a happy people. Third largest economy on the planet. It takes some level of great wisdom to reach such a progressive level.
Yeah but look at their foreign policy. They are a client state to the USA.

As if they have any sovereignty.

Kuwait was also very rich. Japan is very rich but it has no sovereignty. What are we to say about very rich puppets?

I would say, use couple of brain cells in future before posting.

Not every country thinks about war, war, war, , domination and empire like there's no tomorrow.

Kuwait and Japan are much better countries to live in than most countries on this planet.

Japanese people themselves are conscious of this fact. Servitude of Japan to the US has been an issue of debate for several years. Eventually Japan will break free, its only a matter of time. China is pushing this forward for their own means.

China is the factor, which keeps Japan close to US and that's won't be changing anytime soon unless china gives up it claims on some of the territory which Japan claims.

Peace without sovereignty is a hoax it leads to oblivion for one group or worse slavery. Morons who think living in a gold cage is everything won't understand this aspect of human existence.
