Jakarta. Japanese businesses are still interested in investing in Indonesia's labor-intensive sector despite sluggish economic growth hitting the industry, the country's Investment Coordinating Board, or BKPM, said.

BKPM chairman Franky Sibarani made the comments on the sidelines of an investment event in Japan on Friday.

"Interest in investment at the event came from various sectors, including the maritime, manufacturing and labor-intensive industries," Franky said.

"Japan is a strategic partner for Indonesia. It was President Joko Widodo's first state visit destination in March. It also one of four main hubs for BKPM's investment promotion in 2015," he said.

BKPM used the event to follow up investment plans from Japan worth $2.05 billion in labor-intensive industries, $700 million in infrastructure and $650 million in the tourism industry.

According to BKPM data, Japan is the third-largest foreign investor in Indonesia, and it is working hard to strengthen ties in the region.

Japan has invested $2.49 billion in Indonesia in the January to September period, up from $2.04 billion in the same period a year earlier.

Toyota Sienta to be launched in Indonesia this year – MPV set for ASEAN export, Malaysia a possibility?

The second-generation Toyota Sienta is set to be introduced in Indonesia this year. According to Kompas, Toyota Indonesia has accelerated plans to deploy the locally-assembled B-segment MPV earlier than projected – the Sienta was originally due to debut in mid-year, but will now arrive in the market sometime in April, where it is due to slot in between the Avanza and Kijang Innova.

The Sienta will be built at PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia’s new Factory II in Karawang, West Java. The new facility is also set to assemble 1.5 litre engines starting from February, which will be used in the Sienta. The plant will also produce 1.3 litre engines.

Initial production capacity will be approximately 25,000 units, with 80% of these meant for the domestic market, and the rest for export. There was no mention of regional export markets, but we could well see the Yaris-based people mover making its way here. The report adds that Indonesia will become the second production base for the Sienta after Japan.



The Sienta made its Japanese debut last July. Measuring 4,235 mm long, 1,695 mm wide and 1,675 mm tall, it’s around the same size as the Alza, and the vehicle is available in seven-, six- and five-seater options in Japan, the latter limited to a wheelchair-friendly variant.

Toyota Motor East Japan, which assembles the MPV in its domestic market, showed a variety of Sienta examples at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, and these include the Sienta Hearts, modified to as a welcab, with room for wheelchair or even a stretcher.

In Japan, buyers have two Atkinson-cycle powertrain choices – a new 2NR-FKE 1.5 litre VVT-iE engine mated to a CVT and offering 109 hp and 136 Nm (103 hp and 132 Nm with all-wheel drive), as well as a 1NZ-FXE 1.5 litre unit that puts out 74 hp and 111 Nm, the latter powering a Sienta hybrid variant. BKPM Encourages Japanese Investors to Invest in Tourism Sector

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) has encouraged Japanese investors to diversify their investment into the tourism sector, especially in hotels and restaurants.

"The hotel and restaurant sector has its own market. The number of Japanese holidaymakers visiting the country has increased sharply," Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) head Franky Sibarani said Thursday.

Moreover, the government planned to open up foreign ownership restrictions in the tourism sector through the revision of Presidential Decree (Perpres) No. 39 in 2014 on List of Business Fields Closed and Business Fields Open with Conditions to Investment.

"The tourism sector will be opened. Indonesia has offered visa-free travel to 40 countries including Japan," he said.

The realization of investment increased 48.9 percent worth Rp49.6 trillion, Sibarani remarked.

"Hotel and restaurant business areas increased 69.9 percent or Rp12.1 trillion in 2015 as compared to 2014 which recorded Rp7.3 trillion," he stated.

With the revision of the regulation, Japanese investors could open a restaurant or cafe in Indonesia in accordance with the taste of the Japanese people to make Japanese tourists to feel more comfortable in Indonesia.

Based on data from BKPM, the Japanese investment in the hotel and restaurant sector in 2015 amounted to Rp175 billion or increase by 95 percent compared to 2014 Rp89 billion.

However, the number is still small compared to the total investment in the hotel and restaurant business, which reached Rp12.1 trillion.

In terms of realization of the investment based on the country of origin for the period 2010-2015, Japan ranked in second place, while, Singapore ranked first with a value of US$31 billion.

The United States ranked third with an investment of $8.2 billion, followed by South Korea with an investment of $8 billion, and Malaysia with an investment of $7.1 billion.

This is compilation of positive articles, about Japan real investment in Indonesia. And i had made the same kind of thread about China real investment in Indonesia, but apparently not many interested. But the thread about HSR project is attracting more people to comment and discussing.

I wish people to be more hesistant and careful enough before writing anything in social media

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Almost all or 94.8 percent of Japanese direct investments valued at US$14.2 billion in Indonesia in the period of 2010-2015 were in Java.

Head of the Capital Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Franky Sibarani said in a written statement, said the choice of location was based mainly on the investment sectors .

The Japanese have invested mainly in the manufacturing sector, which has contributed much to the process of industrialization in the country, Franky said.

Around 87 percent of the Japanese investment projects in the 2010-2015 period were in the manufacturing industry, he said here on Monday.

He said the transport sector dominated Japanese investment accounting for US$7.5 billion of their total direct investment in the country in 2020-2015.

Other main sectors entered by Japanese investors are metal , machinery and electronic, chemical,pharmaceutical, industrial estate, office buildings and food processing industries.

"There are still wide room for Japanese investment in the manufacturing sector in Indonesia such as upstream oil and gas, chemical, rubber and telecommunication equipment industries ," Franky said.

He said currently Japanese investors began to diversify their business areas with expansion to housing and industrial estate development.;

Japanese investment in the two sectors surged 700 percent to US$519 million in 2015 from only US$71 million in the previous year.

He predicted that the position of Japan as one of the largest investing foreign countries in Indonesia would be stronger.

"With investment of US$14.9 billion , Japan contributed 10.2 percent to the total value of foreign investments in the country in 2010-2015," he said.

Based on data at BKPM, Japanese investment have tended to increase in the country in the past six years.

In 2010, Japanese investments were valued at US$713 million , The investment value shot up to US$1.5 billion in 2011 and up again to US$2.3 billion in 2012 and to a peak of US$4.7 billion in 2013.

In 2014, the Japanese investment dropped to US$2.7 billion in 2014, before rising again to US$2.8 billion in 2015.

In the period of 2010-2015, Japan was second in investment value after Singapore which had investments valued at US$31 billion.

The United States was in third place with investment valued at US$8.2 billion , followed by South Korea with investment of US$8 billion and Malaysia US$7.1 billion.(*)

I suppose she is merely trying to create a platform where key and vital Japanese partnerships with Indonesia are highlighted appropriately. The same way and the same manner as there are various threads here that highlights Sino-Indonesian strategic partnership(s) and key development(s) ranging from cybersurveillance, HSR, to maritime and security development(s).

Indonesian people are very amicable and recognize contributions to various parties that play a role in development of their country in a positive manner.

By doing this , recognizing contributions, they directly influence the judgment and opinion of the direct investors in a positive and reflective manner. Thereby increasing confidence of the investors to increase (double or triple) investments in said country. Ultimately, it boils down to performance and perception of return on investments. I suppose this applies to all related parties; Japanese, Singaporean, Korean, Chinese or American et al.

BKPM: Japanese Company Wants to Build $200m Airport Terminal in Lombok

Jakarta. A Japanese company has expressed interest in developing a $200 million airport terminal in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, as the Indonesian government is looking to attract more foreign businesses and speed up infrastructure development in the next four years, according to the country's Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM).

BKPM chairman Franky Sibarani said in a statement on Saturday that the Japanese investor would be developing the new airport terminal in partnership with Tokyo's Narita International Airport as well as local airport operator Angkasa Pura I. The project will be completed in three phases, he added.

"In terms of our service, we will push the investor to go through the three-hour investment licensing service," he said, referring to BKPM's recent initiative that promises investors a three-hour application process for all basic investment permits.

"Hopefully, the new airport [terminal] will contribute positively to economic development in the eastern region of Indonesia, especially for the tourism industry," Franky said.

Indonesia has been working to attract local and foreign investors to help achieve President Joko Widodo's ambitious infrastructure agenda. Last year, the BKPM booked Rp 545.4 trillion ($40 billion) in investment, up 18 percent from the year before, with 67 percent coming from overseas.

Id like to read more reports on development projects in Sumatra, sister. I've been hearing a lot of reports on Sumatran potential, lately.
The potential one in Sumatra is FTZ Batam Island. currently Singaporean investor are dominated almost 65% of foreign investor.

Batam, Indonesia Interested in Smart City Concept of Japan

JAKARTA, Dec 4, 2015 - (ACN Newswire) - Head of the Batam, Indonesia Management Board (BP Batam) Mustofa Widjaja said he is interested in Japan's smart city concept. Mustofa was offered the concept by a delegation from Yokohama City on a visit to Batam on Thursday.

"The concept offered is very interesting, and in line with the vision and mission of BP Batam and its environmental concept. We discussed the offer from the Japan team, and hopefully that concept could become a reality next year," he said.

The Yokohama City team visiting Batam consisted of officials of the Japanese government, IGES and Iforcom Finetech, offering a concept to make Batam as a smart island and Green City. The waste treatment or electricity reduction projects could be adopted at the Hang Nadim airport, the Hospital of BP Batam Authority and the Batam Industrial Estate.

"Such public facilities are major consumers of electricity, especially the airport for room air conditioners and runway lighting. Their consumption of power is expected to be reduced," Mustofa said.

He said BP Batam already cooperates with the South Korean government in water and waste treatment in the Batam Centre area. Therefore, the concept offered by Yokohama City would be passed on to the airport, terminal, hospital and other public facility operators in Batam.

"We welcome the delegation from Yokohama City. We hope relations between the two countries would be better through city to city cooperation," he said.

Yasuaki Nakamura of the Development Cooperation Division of Yokohama said the concept was offered and used at a hotel in the Philippines which succeeded in reducing power consumption 21.5 percent.

In Indonesia, INFORCOM is cooperating with a hotel and a factory in Jakarta.

He said he hoped cooperation with Batam would help save electricity in public facilities and infrastructure especially at the International Hang Nadim airport and the Kabil industrial estate. --Antara.

well, Sumatra had a lot of untapped potential actually. A region with population and total area comparable with that of Spain (around 470.000 km square of area and more than 56 million populations), there is a lot of things you can do in Sumatra. Sumatra is blessed with a much more educated and hard work people and races comparable with Javanese people, along with untapped rich mineral and soil important to build , like iron, coals, oil and gas, copper, zinc, mangan, timber and other important points to build industry. The challenge here is to build proper infrastructure and linking between one cities to another so they can improving logistic challenge and reducing the price of basic commodities.

Yes, i remember reading about Japanese investors interest in developing northern Sumatra. Would love to know more about Sumatra. And thank you so much for informing us about Sumatra ! I appreciate it and am sure the readers here do, too.
