Japan is the most peaceful country in Asia, according to the Institute for Economics and Peace’s (IEP’s) 2014 Global Peace Index. Its fellow Asian powerhouse China, however, dropped in the rankings amid terrorist threats, international tensions and rapid militarisation.

Ranked ninth most peaceful in the world, Japan also makes the exclusive list of just 11 countries (out of 162) that are deemed to be both free of both internal and external conflict. The only other Asian country to achieve this was Vietnam, though its overall rating (46th) was relatively poor due to other factors. Latin America dominated the list of 11 with five countries with no internal or external conflicts, but whether these are actually the most peaceful countries in the world may be open to some interpretation.

Natalie Southwick at Latin Correspondent writes:

While the low rankings for actual organized conflict are something for these five countries to celebrate, they are just part of the complete study.

The index ranks countries based on 22 different indicators that measure “the absence of violence or the fear of violence.” This means that in addition to a country’s actual involvement in domestic or international conflicts, the country is also ranked based on characteristics like weapons imports and exports, displaced persons, access to weapons, violent demonstrations, political instability and perceived criminality in society.

The Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan was ranked the second most peaceful nation in Asia (16th overall), followed by Singapore (25th), Taiwan (28th), Malaysia (33rd), Laos (38th), Mongolia (41st) and Vietnam (45th).

While most East and Southeast Asian countries were safely ranked in the top half of the table, there were some notable exceptions. Regional powerhouse China was ranked 108th overall, down seven places from last year, with factors like militarisation, criminality, internal conflict and terrorist activity combining to keep it out of the top 100. The spike in violence in the restive Xinjiang reason in western China is likely a significant factor in China’s slide in the rankings.

ASEAN nations Cambodia, Thailand, Philippines and Burma also fared poorly. Particularly worrying is Thailand’s ranking at 126th after months of political turmoil culminating in the military coup of May 22 this year. Unlike Cambodia (106th) and Burma (136th), Thailand is considered an economic leader in the region.

Bottom of the Asian pile is North Korea, ranked at 153rd.

As Latin Correspondent reports, the overall global trends don’t make for easy reading:

The IEP found that only 51 of the countries studied have improved their levels of peace since 2008, while the other 111 have all gotten worse. Overall, “the world has become less peaceful over the last year” because of increased terrorist activity, a greater number of conflicts and growing populations of refugees and displaced persons.

@Viet You want peace. Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan is the most peaceful country in Asia, have you considered moving there?

Every developed country has a relatively stable society, so their citizens can enjoy a peaceful life, Japan also included. But it doesn't mean Japan and Vietnam are not threats of China. Stupid article. Also please note, they paid high price for it as well.

I am tired of your disguised replacement of concept. This article didn't talk about China-VN conflicts. There are 22 different indicators, most of them are internal things. Don't get involve with our own business please. China's low rank has nothing to do with YOUR COUNTRY. It's about Xinjiang, it's our internal affair, don't be delusional.

without the from China created tensions Vietnam (45) would be rated as peaceful as Japan (8). ok, would be much better than 45.
China (108) ranks a bit higher than the Republic of Congo (109).

why should I move to Bhutan? well, it is just a response to the chinese poster "xinxu" claiming "china is the most peaceful country on earth" or other poster "genesis"´s dream of destroying Vietnam.

what does the index mean for a man like you and me?

the likelyhood that you or me gets being killed in China is much higher than in Vietnam, because of higher risk of the internal and external threats. Your money aka greater GDP per capita and large army and police forces cannot protect your life.

If chinese expansionist problem gets resolved all of east Asia will know peace. Only country that can solve this problem is Japan.

Japan barely has a modern military.
Japan has only 6 Aegis class destroyers.
90% of the Japanese military is outdated junk.
One blitz from the Chinese missile forces and Japan would be in the history books.

No one is touching China in the 21st century. Not Japan, not US and certainly not India.

Where are other peaceful countries when their presence is most needed?

Beijing provides selfless aid to Africa in dangerous fight against Ebola

As the proverb goes, "A friend in need is a friend indeed," China's aid to Africa during the Ebola outbreak highlights its resolve to help the African people fight the epidemic.

China, deeply concerned over the spread of the deadly virus, has sent disease control experts to three Ebola-affected West African nations, Guinea, Liberia and Sierra, marking the first time China has provided assistance to foreign countries in the form of dispatching taskforces of public health emergency experts.

A Chinese plane carrying emergency humanitarian supplies, including protective clothing, disinfectants, thermo-detectors and medicines, landed in Guinea recently.

The experts and supplies came at a critical time as the deadly virus became rampant in the region.

China has long been committed to helping African countries improve their medical and healthcare conditions, and answered the call from Africa and the World Health Organization for assistance swiftly and efficiently out of true concern for the health of African people.

Well aware of the destructive effect of viruses, with the outbreak of SARS in 2003 and the H7N9 bird flu virus in recent years, China has accumulated rich experience in control and prevention of public health emergencies.

The Chinese experts in Africa will work with local medical teams and share their expertise in controlling and preventing disease, training local medical workers on personal protection, disinfection and biological safety.

Some may suspect China's aid to Africa is conditional. Those people should know that it is in line with Chinese virtues to help those in need while asking nothing for return, which is something few countries do.

To help Africa fight against malaria, the widespread epidemic, China assisted with the construction of 30 hospitals and 30 malaria prevention and control centers.

It also provided 800 million yuan ($130 million) worth of medical equipment and supplies, such as anti-malaria drugs, and trained over 3,000 medical staff.

Meanwhile, there are currently 43 Chinese medical teams in 42 African countries. And an increasing number of teams are sent to remote areas in Africa annually, offering programs to train various types of qualified personnel on the continent.

Since the outbreak of the Ebola epidemic, members of Chinese medical teams have remained in their positions and continue to offer treatment to the patients infected with the virus, due to their deep concern for the health of African people and strong belief that the virus can be defeated.

It is hoped that with the assistance from the international community, China included, the spread of deadly viruses like Ebola can be controlled and prevented sooner rather than later.

That is why Chinese are crying because Japanese are changing the constitution in their own country

Japan doesn't have the army at the moment but it has the tech. It is only matter of time they will have strongest army in east Asia.

For example I think their 5th gen fighter will be finished before you finish your 4th gen f35copy.

Japan will be crying when we change our no-first-use nuclear policy and aim about 3000 missiles straight at Japan. Fukushima, Hiroshima and Nagasaki will look like a sunday school picnic.

Japanese civilian tech was relevant in the 1980's. They are irrelevant now as a tech power. They are way behind China in military tech.

Japanese 5th gen fighter is a toy fighter like what Iran showed a year or so ago. It was a prototype and it will remain a prototype. It will end up like the Japanese economy.....a total failure.

waaaaaaah Russian below Ukraine it's Western propaganda against Russia.
geeze :rofl::rofl:

US should be dead last considering the wars they start and the genocide they commit.

If you use nukes you can be sure all NATO nuclear bombs will pound your city centers as response. Chinese race will cease to exist. So you have to play the game by the rules. Any way I think Japan's strategy is to dismantle your economy and disintegrate your country in smaller parts. There is nothing you can do in this cold war. Just accept it and take it as a man

Any country that touch China with nukes will be turned into glass. That includes all of NATO.
Japanese are too irrelevant for anyone to come to their rescue including the US.

China now has a hardline president in Xi Jinping and the military budget and military build up will accelerate rapidly. We have the money, we have the engineers & scientists, we have the resources, we have the technology and finally we have a president that is willing to play hardball with thuggish regimes like Japan.

Japan is doing a wonderful job of dismantling its own economy. Japanese economy has been dead for the past 25 years. Its population is the world's oldest and a population that is shrinking.

Japanese companies are all going bankrupt as Chinese and Korean companies destroy Japanese companies and put them into bankruptcy.

Japanese economy is shrinking, Japanese inflation is rising and its wages are falling. They have stagflation.

To even take Japan seriously is pushing it.

Japan is finished as a country and as a civilisation. They mess with the PLA, we will put them out of their misery.
