Japan may set up PAC-3 missile defence at palace
TOKYO: If Japan comes under imminent threat of missile attack, it may deploy a battery of high-tech PAC-3 missile interceptors near the imperial palace in central Tokyo, a newspaper report said on Thursday.
Japanââ¬â¢s first Patriot Advanced Capability-3 interceptors are to be deployed at Iruma Air Base in Saitama, north of Tokyo, next week, as part of a shield being introduced in response to North Koreaââ¬â¢s ballistic missile tests. But given their limited range, the interceptors would need to be moved closer to the political and financial hub of the city to provide optimal protection if a ballistic missile attack was believed to be likely, the Sankei Shimbun daily said.
Large areas of publicly owned land such as the square in front of the vast complex occupied by Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko are being considered as emergency locations, the paper said. ââ¬ÅWe cannot comment on the exact locations where PAC-3s would be deployed,ââ¬Â a spokesman for the Defence Ministry said.
