Japan donates 20 buses for SIDS ‹ Savali News

Government took delivery of twenty 28-seater buses on Thursday morning as part of Japanese assistance towards preparation for the United Nations SIDS conference Samoa is hosting in September.

In a short ceremony at the Matautu wharf, Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi thanked the Japanese government – through its Ambassador – for the continuing assistance.

“This is not the first time Japan has assisted Samoa,” said the prime minister.

“Through the years Japan has tremendously assisted Samoa through the $60 million extension of this very wharf, upgrading of other wharves at Mulifanua and Salelologa, the construction and donation of the Lady Samoa 3 inter-island ferry, construction of the Apia coastal seawall structure, construction of the National University campus at Le Papaigalala,

“And those are just a few of the visible assistance from the people and government of Japan. Japan continues to be an important, reliable and valuable development partner of Samoa.

The 20 buses of the Mitsubishi-Fuso brand is worth US$1 million (WST$2.32 million).

What 's the Samoa value in Japan strategy, if I could know ?

The advance of globalization brings positive effects, sparking economic development and providing people with new opportunities. It also has its negative side, though, including such effects as uneven wealth distribution and the cross-border issues of climate change, infectious diseases, terrorism, and expanding economic crises. These effects pose a threat to the stability and prosperity of Japan—which depends on resources from around the world—and the rest of the international community. The threat is particularly dire for developing countries. JICA will make full use of Japan's experience and technologies as it works in concert with international society to address the various globalization-related issues developing countries face in a comprehensive manner.

Japan, through JICA [Japan International Cooperative Agency], reaches out to developing nations and regions in the world and helps to increase health/medical, infrastructure, economic and social development. It is part of the vision that Japan has had for the past 70 years -- of being a Force of Peace and Development in the World.

An isolated Samoa affects that much ?
