Japan Boosts Crude Import from Iran by 79% Despite Sanctions
TEHRAN (FNA)- Japan's September crude imports from Iran increased by 79 percent despite the US-led sanctions, a report by Japan's trade ministry said, adding that the country imports 187,000 barrels of Iranian crude oil per day.
According to the report, Japan imported 891 million liters of crude oil from Iran in September showing a 79 percent rise as compared to the 498 million liters of crude (imported from Iran) in August.
Japan's crude imports from Iran have considerably increased which shows that Japanese refineries have ignored the US-led sanctions against Iran.
The Japanese parliament has recently passed a law according to which the crude oil shipments from Iran will be insured up to $7.6bln after the European Union (EU) banned insurance companies from giving coverage to all tankers carrying Iranian crude.
Iran was the fifth crude exporter to Japan in September and provided Japan with 5.2 percent of its crude oil needs. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, and Kuwait rank from first to fourth crude exporters to Japan in September.
Japan imported a total of 17.1 billion liters of crude oil from different countries in September which showed a four percent decrease as compared with the previous month.
Japan, which imported nine percent of its oil from Iran in 2011, refused to cease the purchase of the Islamic Republic's crude over concerns regarding the likelihood of a surge in the imported oil prices and its subsequent negative effects on Japan's economic development.
