Japan plans to put a man on the moon by 2030, according to a new proposal by the government's Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (Jaxa).

It is the first time Jaxa has announced its intentions to explore the lunar surface, and will most likely form part of an international mission, the agency said.

Jaxa's plans, announced Wednesday, mean Japan is joining a host of other Asian nations in what is being dubbed the 'Asian space race'.

It is the latest in a series of ambitious plans announced by Asian countries, with rising competition for space-related power mirroring the space race raged between the United States and the USSR during the cold war in the mid-20th century.

In December 2016, China announced its intentions to put a man on the moon by 2036, as well as plans to land a rover on Mars by 2020.

India became the fourth country to plant its flag on the moon in 2008, behind the US, Russia and China, and plans to land a second unmanned probe on the lunar surface by mid-2018.

The country is yet to announce plans for a manned mission to moon.

Jaxa's moon mission was proposed to a panel at Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology this week, which is responsible for directing the country's space exploration.

JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) announced a plan to send Japanese astronauts to explore on the surface of the moon in 2030.

At a committee by MEXT that came together to discuss outer space policies, JAXA indicated it would participate in a plan led by NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) in 2025 to build a space station orbiting the moon and then send Japanese astronauts to the moon for exploration in 2030.

With Japan being able to technologically contribute to the building and operation of the new space station, JAXA wants to be able to earn the privilege to have Japanese astronauts carry out exploration on the surface of the moon. It is thought that in FY2019, the data that will be obtained by an unmanned probe called "SLIM" that JAXA will send to the Moon will help contribute.

It is seen that the aim laid out by JAXA will be further discussed at another committee meeting with MEXT and a more concrete plan proposal will be decided on within the fiscal year.

ＪＡＸＡは、新たな宇宙ステーションの建設や運用に日本が技術面などで貢献することで、今後、日本人の宇宙飛行士が月面探査を行う権利を得たいとしていて、具体的には、ＪＡＸＡが２０１９年度に、月に送り込む計画の無人探査機・ＳＬＩＭで得られたデータの提供などを考えているということです。

ＪＡＸＡが明らかにした方針については、今後、文科省の委員会で議論され、年度内により具体的な計画案が決まる見通しです。

Japan doesn't have the capacity alone to go to the moon by 2030. However, it wants to work with NASA to get there and it totally depends on NASA's future plans.

Also, there is no 'Asian space race'. At least China isn't involved in it anyway. China have a space plan that is based on national, financial and technological capability and not on some 'Asian space race' - just like China's aircraft carrier program.
