The Italian Navy has installed Thaless naval TACtical Air Navigation (TACAN) system to equip its new aircraft carrier Conte di Cavour. The aircraft carrier has now entered into service following an official ceremony led by Giorgio Napolitano, President of the Italian Republic.

TACAN is a short and medium distance navigation radio aid system for military aircraft. It assures secured helicopter and aircraft landing operations, even in adverse weather conditions. By combining the TACAN system with both the radar and communications systems, interference issues are completely eliminated.

Developed and implemented at Thaless worldwide centre of excellence, located in Gorgonzola, the integrated system includes the latest environmental and optical interfacing requirements of the Italian Navy.

Paolo Salvato, the recently appointed Country Corporate Director for Thales in Italy, said: The choice of the Italian Navy is a confirmation of the high level of technological competence achieved by Thales Italy in the design and development of radio navigation and air traffic management systems.

Paul Kahn, Vice President for Thaless ground based Navigation businesses worldwide stated: This entry into service demonstrates Thaless ability to provide a complete solution to the Italian Navys operational needs, and recognises the increasing capability of our centre of excellence in Italy.

Thales is able to offer a complete range of TACAN products for naval, ground, and airborne applications, and now offers a qualified naval variant that meets NATO and Italys quality and certification requirements.
