IT industry has immense potential in Pakistan
By Yasir Ameen - Nov 29th, 2011
Islamabad: Pakistan’s Information and Technology (IT) has immense potential to grow its production and service volume at domestic and international level. The number of IT companies is performing tremendously and differently in different areas of IT including service sector, software programming, software engineering, media production and etc.
But there is a room of improvement in the industry because of the fact that industry has been established by entrepreneurs without major support of the government’s finance and its policy.
This is stated by Naseer A Akhtar is President and CEO of InfoTech recently in an exclusive interview with The News Tribe.
The IT firms are exploring its market themselves nonetheless and moving towards stabilization of industry with many famous brands under its belts working globally.
The IT industry is lacking of vision. IT industry needs vision, strategy and target to get success in short, medium and long-term so it can make difference collectively and enhance its sized and growth rate with investment and employment opportunities.
Presently there are major IT companies working domestically and internationally but they are limited compared with neighboring India which is growing significantly because of the government support and vision.
The government and IT companies should set exports target for the industry and devise a framework to pursue plans with proper coordinated facilities and integration.
The global market has been changed its position particularly for IT industry because its potential markets are not US and EU anymore but Middle East and African market are centre for its activities.
There are many potential sectors such as e-government, e-banking, logistics, transportation, financial institutes and capital markets where Pakistan firms are exploit.
Information and Technology industry needs fresh and experienced software engineers for employing their expertise in the various projects of service sectors and ICT-based infrastructure at domestic and international level.
IT industry is seeking graduates in software engineers but there is acute shortage at local level as a matter of facts educational institutes are not producing students of this field.
The number of students in software engineering is very few compared with the demand but majority of them are inexperienced obviously who needs extensive professional training before providing working opportunity to them in mainstream local and global market.
There are number of telecom engineers who are now redundant in job market after development in telecom sector has seen its end in the country however local varsities are constantly producing telecom engineers who will face tough time at the start of their career unfortunately.
I observe that many telecom engineers were fired by major cellular companies after they rolled out their infrastructure network massively in past decade but now the companies have retained few engineers who can maintain their physical network.
There is a need to bridge the gap between the industry and academia that could communicate the demand of human resource to young generation for pursuing their higher education and their career.
It is the responsibility of the government to establish a platform which conveys properly the industry demands and level of education to local educational institutes of the country.
Unfortunately neither the government’s department nor the private association is performing an important duty and the young potential of our country is wasted.
There are almost 10 varsities producing good students in the field of IT but graduates are not qualitative who get passed out from rest of the universities or institutes. These students should not be blamed because they pay heavy fees and study whatever they are taught. The institutes are responsible for providing obsolete and substandard education and they should be notice and directed by the authorities.
Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) and Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA) should play a vital role in this direction in producing required and qualitative human resource in the country.
These organizations don’t execute any purposeful activities for industry and academia as well. There is a need of research in many areas to recognize the potential and utilization of the local IT industry but they are not playing their which a representative institutes are supposed to do for their members and sector they are attached with.
PSEB has not provided with sufficient funds neither P@SHA is financially strong to hire staff that could carry out different tasks in the research and promotion of IT sector in the country.
The two organizations are hardly running their office affairs owing to lack of funds by the government and members of the association. The government and IT firms should contribute to the exclusive funds for PSEB and P@SHA so that they could execute their due role in the larger interest of IT sector and the country.

The only potential our IT industry has is to work like slaves and get peanuts in return.I have seen enough of those freelancing sites.

Ya, this is the cold hard truth.
