US allows local defense industries to better advanced jet's systems; IAI, Elbit poised to take lead on project

The United States has authorized Israel to install unique systems in its F-35 fighter jets. The project is likely to make the Israeli defense industries some $450 million.
As reported by IsraelDefense in April, the Pentagon agreed to let the IAF install Israeli-made radio and data relay systems in its recently acquired F-35 stealth jets, as well as improve its electronic warfare systems with Israeli components.
To that aim, the Israeli defense industries – mainly Elbit and the Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) – will develop "additions" to the jet's integral systems. Lockheed Martin, which manufactures the F-35, has recently inked several acquisition deals to that effect.
So far, the United States has refused to give Israel any access to the jet's advanced electronic systems. They unique additions planned will afford the jet an advantage over any other air force in the region.
