Israeli imprint in Prithvi missile test

NEW DELHI: In yet another indication of the deep but often covert strategic ties between New Delhi and Tel Aviv, it's now clear that there was an Israeli imprint in the incipient ballistic missile defence (BMD) system tested by India last Monday.

The crucial long-range tracking radar (LRTR) used in the Indian "exo-atmospheric" BMD system, which "successfully intercepted" an incoming Prithvi missile on November 27, owes its origins to the Israeli Green Pine early-warning and fire control radar. India had imported two Green Pine radars, which constitute a crucial part of the Arrow-2 BMD system deployed by Israel to counter the threat of Iranian and other missiles, in a hush-hush manner in 2001-2002.

"Other than the basic radar, which we modified to meet our requirements, all the other elements, hardware and software, are homegrown," said DRDO chief controller R&D, V K Saraswat. Since missile defence can take place both inside (endo) or outside (exo) the earth's atmosphere, DRDO will now test an "endo-atmospheric interceptor" in the next four-five months. The "exo-atmospheric" hypersonic interceptor missile tested on Monday destroyed the Prithvi missile at an altitude of 50-km.

The "endo-atmospheric interceptor", in turn, will shoot the "hostile" missiles much closer to earth with a 30-km range. "Our endo-atmospheric interceptor will be similar to the American Patriot-3 AMD system, which has a 15-km range," said Saraswat.

Though the indigenous BMD system is still several years away from becoming operational, as reported by TOI earlier, it will be a "unique" two-tier system once it is ready. The system will have a mix of the two types of interceptor missiles for a kill probability of 99.8%. "A couple of these missile batteries, for instance, should be able to protect Delhi," said Saraswat. "We have made a very good beginning. At least half-a-dozen tests would be required over the next three years before the system can become ready," he added.

DRDO claims to have modified the Green Pine radars, which can detect targets at ranges up to 500-km and can track them at speeds over 3,000 metre per second. The modifications included making the radar capable of tracking intermediate range ballistic missiles.

What a stupid article, I am begining to believe Rajat is an idiot. Every other media in this country has been screaming it is a Green Pine Radar so did the DRDO, Minor Adjustment was done to the radar, other than there is no reason for him to write as if like a whole new radar was developed keeping green pine as a base. Stupid man

 sir well nothing to be annoyed at the writer . small or large scale modificatioin it should not be a matter of ego and whats new if Israel or Russia help India in this regard.

A drill planned to demonstrate the Navy's ability to knock down two incoming missiles at once from the same ship failed off Hawaii's coast on Thursday, the U.S. Missile Defense Agency said.
A computer configuration problem aboard the USS Lake Erie grounded one interceptor missile, and officials halted the second during the test of the sea-based U.S. missile defense system.

It was the second failure in nine tests of the system by the agency and the U.S. Navy, said Missile Defense Agency spokesman Chris Taylor.

The U.S. Pacific Fleet has been gradually installing missile surveillance and tracking technology on many of its destroyers and cruisers amid concerns about North Korea's long-range missile program.

In Thursday's drill, a dummy enemy ballistic missile was launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai, simulating a missile attack on U.S. territory, and a shorter-range missile was fired from a Navy aircraft and aimed at the anti-missile ship, the Lake Erie, the agency said.

Both target missiles dropped harmlessly into the ocean.

Missile defense officials say the U.S. missile defense system already being installed on ships is still viable, and they are planning a repeat of the dual-launch test, probably sometime next year.

Riki Ellison, president of the Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance, based in Alexandria, Va., said, "Though this event is discouraging, the testing enables our defenses to be more efficient and more effective."

THEY HAVE TO TALK TO THE INDIANS TO MODIFY THERE SYSTEMS.

Two failures out of nine tests isn't bad. And the test failed because the interceptor missile was grounded. Next you'll be saying that the Americans can't get their missiles of the ground.

My dearest,

I have no ego, especially on this case..but i rather have the reporter write articles which are well researched, but not something that he cooked up while crappin in his house,
If Israel helpd India well and good, % of help doesnt matter to me, but informed reporting does.

Yours Faithfully

I remember seeing a video clip in which some Indian official while commenting on the test was showing the drawings of Prithvi with liquid fuel engines. Can anyone confirm or deny if the Prithvi used in the interceptor role was with liquid fuel engines?

Never mind.... I found the answer. Both were single stage, dual engine, liquid fueled Prithvi-II.

I guess Pakistanis will give Indians 30 minutes warnings before firing their missiles, so Indians could fuel up their interceptors.:lol1:
