I have different opinion about different settlements.The biggest settlements are located near the border and they help to improve Israel defence and strategic position (along the coast Israel is only 10 miles wide) and dont cause problems to Palestinians. But there are also settlements which are constructed deep inside territories mostly very small which dont help Israel in any way and on contrary only cause lots of headache.

The bizarre part is this is in Palestinian territory, occupied by the state of Israel which also transfers civilian population. That's against the law and so is their whole occupation.
