I came across this article by Ejaz Haider .. Want to know other's opinion on this article..
A Strategy for A Legacy ‹ Newsweek Pakistan
I have a lot to say on this......I think, article is a crude effort to discredit actions on ground by army and makes it look like..only as perception management by .ISPR which is not true... Even if perception of Gen Raheel's heroism is created by ISPR, it has been possible only due to his daring actions on ground, which are appreciated by people... Our so called intelectuals cant themselves see anything good done by the military, hence the effort to discredit them by making it look like a PR campaign by ISPR only.. Its hard for them to admit tht..maybe Gen Raheel is doing something right, which is the reason for his popularity, not only ISPR.. If ISPR was soo good at creating perceptions..they could have done it for previous chiefs too.. Its a hard pill to swallow for our intellectuals..but the fact is ..he is genuinely popular due to his actions, amongst the masses
Why is it so hard to accept this popularity?
Our media..over the last few years...under international influence..has made a deliberate effort to discredit the military or blame it for all the wrongdoings in the country.. It was shown as only a power hungry institution. Even the generals were held responsible for faults of politicians..because generals were only portrayed as scheming individuals who never let the politicians work ..hence politicians' faults were only a result of power hungry nature of generals , whose only motive in life was to overrun democracy and it had nothing to do with their own greed for power/lust for money.. This perception was deliberately created over the last many years, totally ignoring the fact that why every time..there was a coup..it was widely celebrated by the masses...
This perception was successful to some extent , due to a number of factors... Though not directly related, but Abbottabad operation, Salala incident and frequent drone attacks had led to rapid downfall of armys image (Gen Kiyani's image) in public's eyes... These incidents had a severe impact on the psychology of public... How much was General Kiyani actually responsible, directly or indirectly, for these events..is another topic.. In my opinion, It had more to do..with international geo politics and Pak US relations than Gen Kiyani being the COAS . We cant say for sure on the matter..tht had there been any other COAS at tht time....things would have been different or tht US would not have done these... But nevertheless...it truly jolted the image of army in public, and also the fact these incidents occured in his second tenure, when he was on extension...it only angered the masses more..
So..when due to these factors..the army's image was low in public, media, under western influence, used it to its own advantage.. Hence it was successful to some extent to portray army as an institution, and its generals only, as powere hungry individuals, not really caring abt security of Pakistan
After so many years of perception management by media..it now came as a shock to our intellectuals tht army or its chief's rating is at an all time high in the public... Hence now they are again deliberately creating a counter narrative
Why this narrative doesnt work?
The problem with this narrative is due to the lack of credibility of thes intellectuals..
General Raheel's popularity- Facts and perception
Many factors have contributed to his growing popularity.. Lets try to figure out..how much of it is based on facts on ground and how much can be attributed to brilliant skills of ISPR in perception management
For now..as i conclude..it seems..tht Gen Raheels popularity at this time is genuine and not only the work of ISPR.. He is truly considered as a savior and hero by Pakistanis, right now..but will he be able to retain its popularity till the end of his term? I think as long as all the steps taken by him, uptil now, meet their logical conclusion and not left halfway, he will remain a hero for generations to come...
Special note... Please I would like Indians to not comment on this....and troll.. Your cooperation in this regard will be appreciated

Why this narrative doesnt work?
The problem with this narrative is due to the lack of credibility of thes intellectuals..
- Selective definition of terrorism- These are the same intellectuals, who will be the first ones to encourage to go all out against religious terrorism, but will cry wolf as soon as secular terrorists like MQM and PPP are targetted... They will accuse the same military of stepping beyond its given mandate, as soon as it targets terrorism, not branded religious....They will advocate to go all guns blazing against madrassahs( not only those, who are involved in anti state activities, but all madrassahs irrespective) ...but if any action is taken against international NGOs for their anti state activities, they will cry all sorts of human rights violation slogans or denial of freedom of action/expressions.. They will cite human rights abuses in balochistan, but will never utter a word against drone attack victims.
- Problem with Pakistani identity- as long as anything is associated with pakistani identity or nationalism or religion, they have a problem with it... Recent example is of defence day, when , instead of going along with national mood of enthusiasm and patriotism, of honoring our valiant soldiers and their sacrifices, they chose to turn tht national mood into tht of pessisim, again, about how all our generals are responsible for all the ills in society, and all wars... They totally ignored the fact tht defence day was not about generals, rather honoring our valiant soldiers..
General Raheel's popularity- Facts and perception
Many factors have contributed to his growing popularity.. Lets try to figure out..how much of it is based on facts on ground and how much can be attributed to brilliant skills of ISPR in perception management
- Geo saga- after many years, the first wave of sympathy or love for armed forces and its chiefs came to light after tht infamous geo/ISI controversy... Uptil then, media had cleverly camoflauged its perception / narrative under the guise of being objective... But with tht controversy...public immediately sensed mischief/ulterior objectve.. It was probably those days , tht it occured tht maybe , armed forces are not really the devil made out to be - by the media.. Al those advocating in favor of geo..were seen generally as conspirators
- Operation against terrorists and Karachi operation- Army under General Raheel has been targetting all sorts of terrorists with no distinction made between secular and religious terrorism.a terrorsit with or without a beard is treated alike.....Karachi operation also has been one of the major contributing factor to General Raheel's popularity... Fear of MQM, the fearsome party for decades, was broken .. For the first time in history, its strike went unsuccessful.. Karachiites have , for the first time, taken a sigh of relief, and have begun to see the light at end of tunnel... Though not completely wiped out of terrorism, karachiites now atkeast are hopeful of a peaceful karachi... Karachi operation is a fact and not mere perception created by ISPR
- Anti corruption drive - despite untiring efforts of media to glorify democracy - fact is...over the last few years..citizens have been totally fed up by the immense loot and plunder of the politicians and they are not ready to ignore or overlook corruption for the sake of democracy.. While majority donot want martial law, at the same time, they dont want to be raped by politicians and their corruption under cover of democracy... People had begun to loose hope in states institutions and any sort of accountability... Starting with second phase of karachi operation, where law enforcement agencies started to target people, involved in corruption and terrorism alike...people saw a glimpse of hope..and ultimately with Dr Asims arrest.. .people have started to slowly regain trust in state and its instituitions..This is also a fact, and not only ISPR created perception. Now this anti corruption drive, we see has gained momentum, and what initially started in karachi, has begun to create similar waves in other parts of country with NAB starting ti become active in other provinces too..though still in its initial phase..
- Kashmir issue and relations with India- no matter how much proponents of Aman ki asha, advocate peace with India at all costs - people of Pakistan are not ready to be subservient to India..they want peaceful relations with India on equal footing, not the one sided peace prospect sold to us by Aman ki asha advocates, ignoring Pakistan interests and kashmir.. At a time, when our political leadership also showed extreme urgency to normalise relations with India, ignoring pak concerns.. Gen Raheel Sharif took a stand for kashmir..which had been conveniently forgotten by our ruling elite for the last many years.. He also decided to pay back India in the same coin ...and for the first time, went public, with Indias role in destablising Pakistan for the last many years.. It was only in Corps Comm conference..tht first named RAW for its destablising role in Pak..only then political leadership decided to follow the same path.. Over the last many years.. Pak had kept mum on Indias subversive activities in Pakistan.... Gen Raheel's role in this regard is for all to see, and is a fact, and cannot be attributed to only ISPR
For now..as i conclude..it seems..tht Gen Raheels popularity at this time is genuine and not only the work of ISPR.. He is truly considered as a savior and hero by Pakistanis, right now..but will he be able to retain its popularity till the end of his term?
