Islamist parties wont be banned : Hasina
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday reportedly asked the cabinet members to maintain close contact with leaders of the Islamic political parties, except Jamaat-e-Islami, and to assure them that religion-based politics would not be banned.
The Prime Minister gave the directives at the regular cabinet meeting held at Bangladesh Secretariat, according to insiders.
Sources said Sheikh Hasina also suggested the ministers to exchange views with leaders of Islamist parties, if necessary, to dispel their confusion over reprinting the Constitution in line with a High Court judgment scrapping the Fifth Amendment to it.
The Prime Minister told the meeting that the government is not willing to impose ban on religion-based politics in the country, according to a minister.
She asked the ministers to remain alert so that any quarter or certain party could not create any confusion among the leaders of other Islamic parties and achieve their political gains.
The Prime Minister made the directives when Islamic parties raised their concern over the government move to reprint the Constitution in line with the court verdict.
They continued to stage demonstrations, and launched massive campaign to resist any government move to impose ban on religion-based politics.
Meanwhile, the cabinet meeting discussed the government's activities over the last three months, as well as its 22 months in office.
The holiday schedule for the year 2011 was also approved at the meeting.
Briefing reporters, Prime Minister's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad said the cabinet sat 84 times in the past 22 months and took 554 decisions, of which 488 had already been implemented.
He claimed that the BNP-led government had held 77 cabinet meetings in the first 22 months of its last tenure.
Azad said the Prime Minister expressed her satisfaction over the pace of project implementation under respective ministries. He said since the government took office, so far, a total of 554 decisions have been taken by the cabinet, of which 488 decisions have been implemented.
Besides, 141 draft laws and ordinances have been approved in the cabinet during the said period, among which 126 have been passed in the parliament, Azad said.
He said the cabinet adopted a thanksgiving motion for the Bangladesh cricket team as they whitewashed mighty New Zealand by 4-0 at the Micromax ODI cup, where it was also hoped that the team's performance in the upcoming 2011 World Cup will continue in the same vein.
The Press Secretary informed that Prime Minister Hasina sent several mounds of sweets to the Mirpur national stadium soon after the Tigers defeated the Nez Zealanders.
Before, reports on Bangladesh delegation's participation at second meeting of Bangladesh-Indonesia joint commission in Indonesia, Second high level forum on Emerging Vision for Shared Prosperity: South Asia and Beyond, high level segment of UN's Economic and Social Council in New York were presented at the cabinet meeting.
