Iran was one of the most modern air forces in the world during the Shah's time and maybe the second most modern after Japan in Asia during Cold War. They had everything India and China are acquiring only now. I got to give it to Iranian maintenance engineers; they've kept the F-14s flying so seamlessly till now and that is a really really incredible effort on their part.

In a way, its kinda sad that they're so anti Western brigade these days. Assuming that if they were even neutral, they could have got some really deadly jets and helos from European Union if not USA and due to their own scientific potential, been far more capable. Sad how politics at top makes soldiers suffer at the bottom of power pyramid.
