Al-khalid-1 for reference

Notable differences:

- turret is bigger
- hull looks sloppier and longer
- main gun looks longer, probably 50 cal
- Engine bay/ exhaust looks bigger

HIT constructed at least 3 models of AK-2, I have no idea which one is going to be finalized.

No matter how I look at it, it's still a mix of T80 and T72 which Type 99 is.

Khalid uses compact Ukerainian engine as original Type 90 prototypes did.

Norinco wanted to get them for 99, but their availability was far from stellar, and they had to use much bigger domestically made engines.

Therefore serially made 99 had to have bigger hulls to accommodate domestic engine.

I believe Pak army wants to keep Khalid's design as close to the baseline for ease of getting updates from Type 99. and upgrading the hull to match the "upstream" design is the rationale here.

For me I still believe that for us best way forward on AK 2 is to work with Turkey and develop a 55 tone version of Altay. Get the 1500 HP engine from Ukraine.

Looks like they have chosen the following configuration. Image from HIT's old website

Type 99A uses diesel engine with 1500hp compared to Ukraine gas turbine engine of only 1200hp.

China will never equipped its main battle tank with gas turbine becos its not economical and is a gas guzzler. Poor for logistics.

Uk had no gas turbine. They had 2 stroke diesel that weighted <2 tons.

Russian T80 had turbines. PLA tried them, and came to same conclusion apparently: hull must be cheaper, and throw out the turbine.
