Is SARRC Successful?

SARRC - South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation.

The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) is an economic and political organization of eight countries in Southern Asia In terms of population, its sphere of influence is the largest of any regional organization almost 1.5 billion people, the combined population of its member states. It was established on December 8, 1985 by India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Maldives and Bhutan. In April 2007, at the Association's 14th summit, Afghanistan became its eighth member.

SARRC Members - India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Maldives, Bhutan and Afghanistan.

SARRC Observers – China, Japan, Iran, South Korea, USA, Myanmar, European Union, Australia and Mauritius.

The objectives of the SAARC are:

1) To promote the welfare of the people of South Asia and to improve their quality of life.

2) To accelerate economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region and to provide all individuals the opportunity to live in dignity and to realize their full potential.

3) To promote and strengthen collective self-reliance among the countries of South Asia.

4) To contribute to mutual trust, understanding and appreciation of one another's problems.

5) To promote active collaboration and mutual assistance in the economic, social, cultural, technical and scientific fields.

6) To strengthen cooperation with other developing countries.

7) To strengthen cooperation among themselves in international forums on matters of common interest.

8) To cooperate with international and regional organizations with similar aims and purposes.

Future SARRC Members and Observers

People's Republic of China has shown its interest in joining SAARC as a Member supported by Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal. Now China has the observer status in the SARRC. China seeks a strong friendship with all SAARC member countries.

Iran has shown its interest in joining SAARC as a Member supported by Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India. Now Iran has the observer status in the SARRC. Iran seeks a strong friendship with all SAARC member countries.

Indonesia has shown its interest in joining SAARC as an observer supported by Sri Lanka.

Russia has shown its interest in joining SAARC as an observer supported by India.

Myanmar has shown its interest in joining SAARC as a Member supported by India. Now Myanmar has the observer status in the SARRC. Myanmar applied for SAARC membership in May 2008.

South Africa has shown its interest in joining SAARC as an observer.
