Is India going for F-35 instead of F-16 or F/A-18?

.
"make in India F-35" ?
I am not living in fool's paradise.

No ti is not as it took India nearly a decade to cough up that amount for the Rafales.

Not really, this contract was agreed to under 2 years ago & the money will be made available. Negotiations on money matters take time, a single engined aircraft order will have to be made in India. Not like you need $10 billion straight away, that's the price of the whole deal when completed.

As a matter of fact, India & Russia are negotiating the purchase of the S-400 for a figure of $5-6 billion plus a nuclear submarine for about $1,5 billion plus who knows what else, some talk of some frigates for atleast another couple of billion. Those payments will be needed far more quicker than any payment for the fighters.

That tender was cancelled, as it stands the French have an order & India wants another single engined aircraft.

So let me get this right, India rejected 126 F-16s or 126 F-18s or 126 Mig-35s or 126 JAS 39 Gripens for $8.2 billion and when for 36 Rafales instead. But now, India also wants 90 F-16s or 90 F-18s or 90 Mig-35s or 90 JAS 39 Gripens for another $10 billion? Very clever.

No Gripen I think..

Gripen has a great chance. It depends on how Modi thinks. If Modi by buying F16 India can also buy US influence, he may go for F16. If Modi buys on pure merit than Gripen has better chance as Gripen is a newer fighter.

Media has gone bonkers in full frenzy, now F-35 without ant remotest chance of it
F35 as of now is just a dream not even the closest of close US allies can have it as there are more than 2000 on order already and till they are met new orders cant be taken

but now possibility is gaining of F16 Blk 70/72 yet again which can carry 8.5 tonne of weapones and still carry enof fuel internally and in its CFTs to have 550+Km combat radius even in 6-8Km alatitude with a GaN-AESA based radar and combined avionicks/EW-ECM-Jammer suite and a weapons pakage more leathel than anything out there except F22 it can smash through any airforce in Asia or europe for that matter

but we are certaily not going for grippen or F35 period

Will USA provide engine ToT with F-16 or Gripen?I doubt so.WIthout engine tech, there is no point buying them.Private sector should be allowed to set up production lines for LCA,HAL is too slow

Certainly if we are offered that fighter and the price is reasonable (say $100 mil to $120 mil) because the original requirement was 126, not 36. This 36 purchase is a temporary thing.

Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha

“I cannot say I only want Rafale. I want capability of Rafale-type aircraft. So the government will have a look at it and based on urgency and the type of contract signed with Dassault Aviation, further decisions may be taken by the government. I cannot predict,” Raha said.

The Indian tender for the MMRCA didn't have a specific figure , any Rafale order for 126 aircrafts would probably have been in the region of $25 billion which was why it was cancelled.

The orders are now being divided into single engined & twin engined. This is official communication from GoI, not just random talk on the forum. All further requirements will have a completely build in India clause with substantial technology transfers.

Even the LCA uses an US engine, it's one of the factors causing the Gripen to potentially shoot up the offer stakes because it could share the same engine & may well help with the LCA as opposed to the F16.

F35 is a speculation...may be at latter point India may acquire. The main competitors for this new deal is F18/F16/Gripen.

Lockheed Martin apparently made the presentation to India after authorization by the US Department of Defense (DOD), but Prins pointed out that the F 35 could be sold only after clearance from the US State Department, for which bilateral negotiations between New Delhi and Washington would need to be held once India expressed interest.

F-35A reported per unit cost is 98$ million with additional funds required for weapons ,spares and training support . Defence analyst close to idrw.org do not believe Lockheed Martin will offer Transfer of Technology (TOT) nor will agree to Make it in India , most likely it will offer to establish local supply chain in India for its maintenance and components but it is unlikely to see any interest in India’s Defence ministry
