This is purely an opinion guys so no need to rant. What's your take on this topic? Without the US, would Canada be any different than today?
Canada would be part of Russia. Going through Alaska, the Russians would easily have overwhelmed any presence in Canada with shear numbers. The Russians are used to crossing long, cold and mountainous terrain, that would hardly impede their progress.
The only other scenario would be Canada remaining British, due to the US being part of the UK instead of being a nation of its own. Either way, without the US dissuading aggressors, Canada wouldn't be a nation.
Like us or hate us, you need us for your protection. Just don't piss us off or you'll become our next state... officially, that is.

Seriously though, I love Canada. Your beer, your sports (Sabres fan... oh well, we'll suck for McDavid. And Leafs sucks!!!), your chicks. Canada is our little brother and no one fu**s with you without fu**ing with us too.
No single country would be what it is today if it weren't for global contact and geopolitics, which requires equal involvement of other nations. The notion that Canada is more predisposed towards international influence, whether due to her size, culture, economics, or whatnot, overlooks the fundamental dual nature of international relations.
I'm just curious, how would you define a "Canadian chick"? Are you referring to an Aboriginal girl? Or are you simply attracted to femmes with a penchant for beer, skiing, and hockey fights?
On a more serious note, maintaining a Commonwealth identity doesn't preclude Canada from being just about as sovereign as any other country. Heck, Canada can even declare war on the UK if need be.
We do, in fact, appreciate the military umbrella the United States extends us. However, keep in mind that 100+ CF-18 Hornets, 13 major surface combatants, four submarines, 120 Leopard 2 tanks, 600 armored infantry fighting vehicles, and 19 anti-submarine aircraft aren't exactly a trifle to overlook when planning an invasion!
