Iraqis clear the debris following a blast in central Baghdad on April 19, 2012, as a wave of bombings and shootings across Iraq killed at least 38 people and wounded dozens more.

Official figures show that the death toll of violence in Iraq increased in April from the previous month when the toll was down at its lowest level since the 2003 US-led invasion.

A total of 126 people, including 88 civilians and 38 security members, were killed during attacks in April across the country, figures compiled by the ministries of health, interior and defense reveal.

This is while, 112 Iraqis, including 78 civilians and 34 security members, were killed in March-- the lowest monthly figure since the US-led invasion of the country.

The figures also show that a total of 271 people were wounded in April, including 132 civilians and 139 security members.

The deadliest incident occurred on April 19, when a wave of coordinated shootings and bombings in seven different provinces killed 38 people.

On April 26, a car bomb attack near a cafe and another bomb attack inside it killed eight people in central Iraq, while bomb attacks in Baghdad killed four others.

Although violence in Iraq has dropped sharply from its height in 2006-07, bombings and killings still occur on a daily basis.
