The Iraqi Minister of Industry and Minerals, Engineer Mohamed Shi'a al-Sudani, confirmed that his country will be free from political pressure on the armaments by starting soon to produce various types of weapons with the participation of international specialized companies.

Al-Sudani said in an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat following the announcement of the invitation of dozens of international companies with the aim of developing the military industries in Iraq: "Iraq was relying on arming its armed forces and security services on imports of equipments, light and medium weapons, and ammunition. And we decided to turn to the military industries because it is a flaw for a country like Iraq amidst all these challenges to not have a special factory to produce equipments and ammunition".

Al-Sudani added that "the equipments we have decided to manufacture domestically will be used even in times of peace, not only in times of war, knowing that after we have defeated Daesh, we will concentrate on fortifying our internal defense situation with the development of our society scientifically and technically. This project was not possible because the investment budget did not exist originally for all ministries because of the financial crisis, which led us to go for investments in this sector, in agreement with Prime Minister Dr. Haider Abadi by relying on private international companies or governments provided they be strict In both cases, taking into account the principle of diversification of companies so as not to count on a particular axis, East or West.

The Iraqi minister said that "it was agreed to invite 36 international companies directly, as we asked them to come with their own production lines and set up in Iraq and establish their factories here, with the assurance that we will provide all the required requirements, where we have all the potential in terms of land and legal framework represented In the company of military industries, with a law that allows government companies to enter into agreements with international companies".

Al-Sudani said that "these companies are invited until next month, and it is hoped that we will hold a working session to clarify many of the issues that are required by the companies who have confirmed their desire to work with us, in accordance with these conditions. This is part of our commitment to it. "

"There are companies in the Iraqi private sector that have agencies from international companies. We have accepted and encouraged this, while there are Iraqi industrialists who will also partner with us through their dealings with companies that sold their production lines," Sudani said. He pointed out that "work will be through former military manufacturers, including experts and competencies who still exist, in addition to the readiness of many plants and factories for this type of operating lines".

As for the benefits to Iraq, al-Sudani points out that in addition to saving the amount spent annually on the purchase of this type of arms and ammunition worth more than $ 1 billion, the project "will provide $ 900 million in addition to ensuring the operation of factories inside Iraq, Salaries of employees, and the hiring of more Iraqi labor. Such a project will free Iraq from a lot of pressure on imports of weapons, including equipment and light and medium ammunition, for reasons related to the positions of this or that country in certain cases, which makes us prisoners of their political satisfaction or not, in addition tol puting an end to political obsessions, as some of the political forces have asked some countries not to arm Iraq with certain types of weapons under various pretexts, and therefore it will make us free in terms of this detail of the armaments ".

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi called for the production of Drone aircrafts. A statement by the Office of Abadi on the backdrop of the recent chairmanship of the meeting of the Military Industries, he called for: "Developing a strategy to restore the military industry in Iraq, and support the armament and local industry, and the importance of being within the international specifications, and work on the production of light and medium arms and Hawn ammunition, And also Drones. He added that "during the meeting, it was stressed the importance of the integration of efforts between the public and private sectors, the need for external expertise in order to have the best production, as well as indicating the actual need of the security and military institutions."
