Iran has high capacity to supply gas to neighbors, Europe

TEHRAN, Feb. 22 (MNA) – Referring to Iran's huge gas reserves, Iranian Oil Minister said that the Islamic Republic of Iran enjoys high capablity to supply gas to neighboring countries and Europe.

Speaking on the sidelines of 6th Summit of Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) in Qatari capital Doha on Tuesday, Iranian Minister of Oil Javad Owji stated, “During the sixth GECF summit, Iran has repeatedly announced that it has enjoyed necessary capacity to supply gas to neighboring countries and even Europe."

Iran’s oil minister said on Monday that unilateral sanctions against members of the forum threaten global energy security and that Iran provided the best option for gas exports to east and west, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported.

Qatar has good ties with Iran, with which it shares a giant gas field. Tehran supported Doha after Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies imposed a boycott on Qatar in mid-2017 in a dispute over its ties with Islamist groups and non-Arab Turkey and Iran.

TEHRAN (SHANA) – Iranian Minister of Petroleum, Javad Owji, announced that Tehran is prepared to trade natural gas and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) with members of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) through various ways including swap, transit and other common methods.

Owji made the remark on the sidelines of the Extraordinary Ministerial Meeting of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) held on Monday February 21, 2022 in Doha, Qatar.

Over the last two years, we have witnessed the outbreak of the COVID-19 and its new variant, Omicron, as well as its adverse impacts on social and economic conditions of major countries across the globe. Although gas industry has been less affected than other sectors, it has had its ups and downs. The current energy crisis, the fluctuations in global gas market in particular, has mainly caused by global gas supply and demand, especially in the European Union where declining storage and restrictions on natural gas supply resulted in rising prices in various regions and markets. On the other hand, the absence of strategic stability has been a major factor in recent developments in high natural gas prices in Europe, he said.

Accounting for 50 percent of the world’s natural gas exports, the GECF has been able to maintain its strategic role in the sustainable supply of natural gas to the world despite the outbreak of corona virus pandemic. This owes much to the member states’ perseverance and reflects the forum’s effective strategy. Considering the energy transition as well as the requirements of the climate change and sustainable development, the GECF has tried to improve the security of natural gas supply in regional and global markets and paved the way for an inclusive development of natural gas and LNG consumption as the available and eco-friendly fuel across the world, especially energy-poor countries, he said.

Iran’s core policy, as one of the world’s largest holders of proven natural gas reserves and a founder of GECF, is to provide maximum support to the spirit of cooperation and GECF collective decisions in accordance with the GECF Statute and the procedures agreed upon by the forum’s member states to fulfill the interests of natural gas exporters and importers, Owji added.

It is noteworthy that Iran, with thousands of kilometers of gas supply network, is one of the leading countries in this area. Therefore, we strongly believe that the imposition of unilateral and transnational sanctions against any of the Forum’s member states can disrupt the steady flow of natural gas worldwide and jeopardize the security of natural gas supply, he said.

In this regard, member states and observers’ supports for the concepts of “depoliticization of international and global gas cooperation”, and “return to economic logic and multilateralism”, also emphasized in the Summit’s statement, can play a significant role in maintaining security of gas supply and demand in the world and realization of fair prices for all stakeholders in the global gas industry. The imposition of unilateral and illegal sanctions against Forum’s members is not only against international laws, but also a major cause of uncertainty in the global energy market, he mentioned.

In addition to revenue generation, reviving gas swap can help increase Iran’s share in world gas trade. Just in four months after the 13th government took office, Iran, the Republic of Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan signed an agreement to swap two billion cubic meters of gas which can not only help maintain stability of gas network in northern provinces of Iran, will also strengthen Iran’s share in global gas trade, he stated.

The 13th government and the Ministry of Petroleum are determined to increase Iran’s share in natural gas trade and help meet the growing gas demand in the world through developing Iran’s regional and international relations in gas trade, the Iranian minister said.

We are ready to cooperate with all member countries of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum in the existing ways of natural gas and LNG trade including swaps, transit and other common methods. It should be noted that our country’s geopolitics is in a way that can be used as the most desirable corridor for gas transmission to the East and West, he added.

We not only have the largest gas reserves in the world, but also neighbor the world’s largest gas reserves holders, including Russia, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan in the north, and Qatar in the south. We also have access to the gas exports corridor to Europe via Turkey. All these indicate the importance of Iran as one of the main pillars of global gas trade, Owji noted.

Meanwhile, the large size of the country enables the storage with the cooperation of Forum’s members to control seasonal conditions. It is worth mentioning that as a leading country in construction and expansion of domestic gas supply network, we have the appropriate technical and engineering capacity to partner with the member countries, he added.

You have to admit, the Iranians know how to keep hope alive

Europeans are not exactly spoiled for choice when it comes to steady, affordable gas supply. Do you think that they would risk their oil dependence only on Scottish gas & let UK control entire Europe?

The EU leaders just screwed the world population by giving reasons to hike global oil & gas prices. Something that people were already struggling with after the pandemic restrictions started easing.

Qatar, Iran & Russia are 3 massive oil & gas suppliers in the world. Qatar said that pipelines are not feasible to Europe for the price they are offering; Iran is sanctioned and now Russia is being sanctioned.

At this point, either they remove sanctions on Iran, or stop further sanctions on Russia. If they keep going in this direction, there will be civil war all over Europe over impossible gas and oil prices.

Your points are very valid and relevant, but you fail to recognise the amount of hate among the Americans and the Israeli/Jewish sections of this world. All three hold enough power to keep the Europeans in check.

They have just taken on an idiotic fight with Russia for sake of a nation they are not responsible for, they already failed in Crimea, how did they ever think it would be different this time around.

Unless, they, read the Americans, foresaw all this but calculated this as a perfect opportunity to bring the European nations inline with American policy. The Europeans were wavering with regards to China, and after Trump the Western alliance was shaky. The Americans needed an excuse to renew it's leadership role, and grab a reason with which to knock the Europeans on their heads.

Well done, America, nice play. Also means no chance for Iran.

It will work for Russia as well. Most imports are coming from Eu currently. By selling China some of the gas imports will be substituted and hedged from another source. Import dependence of Russia would reduce towards Eu and gas amounts can be arranged during times of possible sanctions.
For Eu the dependency to gas from almost a single source would be reduced which is obviously a major strategic issue from Eu perspective. Everytime the gas issue with Russia is brought up .Reducing dependence to this would free Eu hand more.
For Iran another export partner other than China and healing the wounds of previous sanctions as well as showing that peace through economy is Irans main aim of influence growth not gaining land or similar. Its presence in Syria and Labennon are not the cause but effect of previous military attacks that is aimed against Iran. Also from Iran side integrating more to world economy would reduce the chances of conflict even with israel if israel does not start the conflict. Both Hezbollah and Palestinian groups under its influence would be more hesitant to initiate attacks or incursions unless israel starts making trouble again. Extra income from Eu can be spent to aviation , defensive equipment like sams and other civilian products as a goodwill measure and although noone can interfere with Irans only deterrence against mass air attacks which is its mid range ballistic missiles extra income coming from Eu can be spent to other areas as a sign of goodwill in my opinion. That will have a stabilising effect in major areas not only in middle east.

Gas ability of Iran is not less powerful than of Russia.

@aryobarzan @QWECXZ @Muhammed45 @Hack-Hook @925boy
Iran has large reserves of natural gas and it is on par with Russia but the idea of a Europe-Iran pipeline is not feasible at the moment, due to sanctions and geopolitical consequences of such a huge energy line. Turkey will also benefit hugely from such a hypothetical pipeline because most probably part of the pipeline will pass through Turkey as well. Anyway, I don't get why you mentioned me.

.
Iran also has access to Turkmen gas. If we can transfer Qatar's gas to Iran's system; yes, Iran can easily solve Europe's energy crisis in mid term.

For years, Europe did not want to see the only solution, southern gas corridor. So they have bogged down the eastern mediterranean potential with stupid political issues. And on the Iranian gas issue, they never gave priority to the ITP which could be main source. What happened now? All European countries started to invest in LNG capacity with a great panic. Who is Europe's largest LNG supplier? USA. The irony is that as the risk of war in Europe increases, the USA comes to the fore as an energy supplier.

Let Europe trust Turkiye, Iran,(even Algiers) first. By the way, I'm sure Iran is using this as leverage in the nuclear negotiations, and of course the lifting of unfair embargoes.

.
The replacement deals has already gone to Qatar and Azerbaijan whereas Algeria gets a boost supply from southern europe to all of Europe.. Will the west gas? Highly unlikely

only on talks and paper . any gas diverted to those countries is reduced from the gas already shipping to other countries and that alone can insanely drive up the price of gas
