Iranian military upgrading radar systems

Iran has designed and built radars that can track airplanes with low RCS that are difficult to detect, an Air Force officer announced on Thursday.

Radar cross section (RCS) is a measure of how detectable an object is with a radar. A larger RCS indicates that an object is more easily detected.

Iran also plans to design S band and L band radar systems, Air Force Brigadier Hamid Arjangi told the Mehr News Agency.

S band is a frequency range from approximately 1.55 to 5.2GHz, which is used for Digital Audio Radio Satellite (DARS) satellite radio systems. L band is a frequency range between 390MHz and 1.55GHz, which is used for satellite communications and for terrestrial communications between satellite equipment.

Iran is also designing radar systems that can operate within OTH frequency, Arjangi said.

Over-the-horizon radar or OTH (sometimes also called beyond the horizon or BTH) is a design concept for radar systems to allow them to detect targets at very long ranges, typically up to thousands of kilometers.

Oh nice, so they are giving away the possible frequencies. Easier for the anti-radiation missiles to tune into.
