Most males atleast in south asia actually indulge in the zanjeer zani...the scale to which they cut themselves varies..but they do cut themselves...

You know as well as me that there are no 'stats' for these kinda things and mostly it is out of personal experience. In India the largest concentration of shias are there in UP, Hyderabad and Mumbai and in all these places the processions include the zanjeer zani. And its the most brutal in Mumbai which is the largest procession in India.

On an unrelated note Shias constitute about 15% of the Muslim population in India which means there are approx 23 million shias in India.
