Iranian Air Force Kills During Iran Iraq War

In hindsight we can argue that the Iranians would have been better of with the F-15 even it it came without the AIM-54

There is a fun story on why the F-14 was selected over the F-15. Apparently there was a demo arranged for the Shah in which both planes performed. The F-15 performed first and during its performance, the F-14 pilots did something bold. They kept the engines running so that the fuel load got depleted and that they had just enough for the performance flight. As a result the F-14 flew with massive thrust to weight ratio and that, combined with the superb low speed handling of the swing-wing design, sold the Shah on the type.

Nothing could replace F-14 as an air superiority interceptor fighter aircraft.

But you are right, our F-14 had a huge gap with F-4s. F-15s could be a better Choice before receiving F-14. Given the fact that Iraqi airforce was mostly from eastern/French origin.

Not to mention that IRIAF had placed a huge order for F-16 which was cancelled after the Revolution and Americans stole Iran's money. Other Wise the gap wouldn't have existed and the F4s could be retired almost 40 years ago.

Some interesting reporting here from Washingtonpost but i seriously doubt that we were the ones cancelling it. All of our ordered F16's were sent to Israel for free. (At end Israel got 160 F16's that were meant for Iran).

Anyway, this is the problem with American weapons, you have to be their puppet or a semi puppet for them to sell weaponry to you. One wrong move and all hell will break lose and they will cancel all contracts. It is better to build your own weapons.

That is not what the link says.
Israel had already ordered F-16s, and the cancelled F-16s were just redirected allowing earlier deliveries, most likely at the original price.
Iran certainly did not pay for them.

Iran did pay with its oil revenues. At least for a few units.
Washingtonpost is not really a good source to dig deeper in this issue though since it is a propaganda arm of the US establishment. Try to google ''Iran Shah F16 deal'' and you will see what the true story behind it is.
