Iran welcomes Saudi pardon for Iranians on death row

Published Wednesday, April 18, 2012
Iran – a state that still practices capital punishment – on Wednesday welcomed Saudi Arabia suspending death sentences against several of its nationals convicted for drug trafficking.

Iran's protests over the matter led to intervention from Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal, media reported, quoting Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi.

"He (Faisal) exerted effort in this regard and the next day he called back and said that, for the time being, the execution of the Iranians has been suspended and this is a good sign," Salehi said, according to the ISNA news agency.

"I am announcing my thanks to Saudi officials," he said, according to the Mehr news agency.

Salehi said Saudi Arabia was considering an offer to extradite the Iranian criminals to Iran instead.

In the ISNA report, Salehi added that "many" Iranians were being held in Saudi prisons, but did not give a number.

Both Iran and Saudi Arabia have been criticized by human rights groups for their high number of executions ordered under their interpretations of Sharia law, which calls for death sentences for a range of crimes including murder, rape and drug trafficking.

Amnesty International late last month said there had been a significant increase in judicial killings in Iran, Saudi Arabia and Iraq in 2011.

Iran had executed at least 360 people, three-quarters of them for drugs offenses, it said in a report, up from at least 252 in 2010.

Amnesty said it had credible reports of at least a further 274 unconfirmed or even "secret" executions in Iran.

Saudi Arabia had executed at least 82 in 2011, compared to 27 the year before, Amnesty said.

The increase in these two countries alone more than accounted for the 149 net increase in known executions across the world, according to Amnesty.

I do hope this leads to reciprocal confidence building measure's leading to dialogue and better relations between Arabs and Iranians

Why is it that more of you guys are not coming on this thread and making comments. It is very good news that our Muslim brothers are making positive gestures to each other. Hopefully it will clear misunderstandings.

As stated by other members here, this is a good gesture by Saudi Arabia. The Iranian government can use this friendly gesture to their advantage, they could call for dialogue to get rid of any misunderstandings between the 2 nations. Perhaps they could even use this as an opportunity to ease tensions with UAE over the island dispute. Anyway, lets wait & see how Iran reciprocates to this action.

Iran herself is very strict when it comes drugs, Why they demanded to suspend execution? :undecided:

Issues such as the ones described in this article:

GCC must stand up to Iran interference

what evidence do they have Iran is interfering? They are just talks. this is propaganda again Iran.
Iran tries to have good relation with them. ahmadinejad even visited.
check the wikileaks, their king calls Iran a snake and so on. but there nothing about Iran saying anything.

what misunderstandings? Last time I checked it is saudi regime who want to kill shias.

PGK calm down mate. We are all Muslims if Saudis put an olive branch lets hope it clears up and brings Muslims countries closer rather than against each other. The real enemy is Israel and Americans

Because they could be lying. they could not had any drugs. this is a country that lashed women for driving.

PGK they Saudis could have executed them at the request of Iranians they did not. That is surely a good will gesture. And good news

I am not saying it is not a good gesture. I was replying to the comment made that Iran need to deal the "misunderstanding"
LOL brother, we tries peace in this thread. but the people like this thread create ruined it. they do not know the meaning of peace.
to them peace is something short term.

Lets hope that something good comes out of this for both Iranians and Arabs.
