TEHRAN – Tehran and Ankara set a target of $30 billion for annual trade at the 24th meeting of Iran-Turkey Joint Economic Committee, which opened in Tehran on Tuesday.

Iranian Minister of Communications and Information Technology Mahmoud Va’ezi and Turkish Minister of Development Cevdet Yilmaz co-chaired the meeting, IRNA reported.

Yilmaz is leading a delegation of 100 Turkish traders and businessmen.

During the three-day event, the two sides will discuss bilateral ties in the fields of transportation, customs trade, industry, energy, agriculture, environment as well as joint investment and cooperation between private sectors.

Addressing the meeting, Va’ezi stated that proper measures were taken during Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s trip to Tehran in January. He said it opened a new chapter in Iran-Turkey relations.

For his part, the Turkish minister said the value of bilateral trade was about $1 billion in 2002, but the figure reached $14 billion in 2013, according to the Mehr News Agency.

Iran is the 10th largest importer of goods from Turkey and the 6th largest exporter of goods to the country, he explained.

Iran and Turkey have signed a preferential trade agreement which could pave the way for a hike in the bilateral trade. The agreement was signed during Erdogan’s visit to Iran in January. At the time, Erdogan said the goal is to boost trade between the two neighbors to $30 billion by 2015.

In December 2013, the Ankara ambassador to Tehran said Iran and Turkey have set a long-term target of $100 billion for annual trade transactions.

Iran, Turkey Agree on Building Industrial Town near Common Borderline

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian and Turkish officials in a meeting in Tehran on Tuesday agreed to establish a joint industrial town near their common borders.
The agreement was struck by Iranian Communications and Information Technology Minister Mahmoud Vaezi and Turkish Development Minister Cevdet Yilmaz.

During a meeting in Tehran on Tuesday, Vaezi proposed setting up an industrial town near the Northwestern Iranian city of Bazargan which was also agreed by Yilmaz.

The Turkish development minister is in Tehran to discuss bilateral ties with senior Iranian officials.

Yilmaz also took part in the 24th meeting of the Iran-Turkey Joint Economic Cooperation Commission to follow up on Tehran-Ankara trade and economic relations.

Last week, Iran's Ambassador to Turkey Alireza Bigdeli underscored that Tehran and Ankara are resolved to pursue seriously their common goal of boosting annual bilateral trade up to $30bln by next year.

The 24th Iran-Turkey Joint Economic Cooperation Commission meeting kicked off in Tehran with an expert meeting on Monday to pave the ground for the materialization of the two countries' common economic goals.

The meeting of the representatives of ministries and economic organizations of the two countries is held on Tuesday and Wednesday after a review over cooperation in the last year. They will also prepare the economic programs of the two countries for the next year within the framework of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Before his departure to Tehran, the Turkish development minister praised his country's trade ties with Iran, and said Ankara is determined to broaden its trade and economic relations with Tehran.

Iran and Turkey increased their trade transactions in the first two months of 2014 as compared with the figures of the corresponding period in the last year.

The value of trade transactions between Tehran and Ankara hit $2.115bln in January and February, the trade data recently released by the Turkish government said.

Iran and Turkey have in recent years increased their cooperation in all the various fields of economy, security, trade, education, energy and culture.

The two sides have exchanged several politico-economic delegations during the last few months.

Once sanctions are lifted, and Iran is allowed to compete in the global market, you will see great growth in Iranian economy.

Iran and Arabs need to develop an effective, independent, and permanent mechanism of co-operation based on mutual interests. Iran vs Arab rivalry is killing the region...

Tell the Iranians. We never had had any problem with Iran during the Shah's days.

Iranians have their interest in the middle-east...genuine one's....

And THAT is why I said

"Iran and Arabs need to develop an effective, independent, and permanent mechanism of co-operation based on mutual interests."

Arabs and Iranians need to figure out a balance in their strategic relationship.

You expect Iran to drop all its interests in the region? Won't happen.

Iran wants all Middle-East to come under its influence..or atleast all shia populations of Middle-East? Won't happen.

Arabs and Iranians need to allign themselves in such a way that protects everyone's interest in the region with both sides making compromises to reach a long-lasting consensus of progress.

The sooner you realize this, the better.

Fair enough :-)

Iran can dominate the universe as much as it wishes, but no at someone else's expense.

Keeping distance from each other is what we perhaps need.

Turkey 'seeking free trade deal with Iran'

Ankara's current efforts towards streamlining trade are aimed at fully widening scope of business with Iran, says Turkish Development Minister at Tehran forum.
World Bulletin / News Desk

Turkey has started to work on a deal with Iran to ease business between the two nations with the ultimate goal of having a full free-trade agreement, Turkey's Development Minister has said.

Speaking at a business forum in the Iranian capital of Tehran on Wednesday, Cevdet Yilmaz said: “The two countries complement each other. Turkey is the gateway for Iran to the west and Iran is to the east for Turkey.

"If the two nations cooperate more, it has the potential to affect the entire region. We can use this potential more accurately by not only increasing trade between two nations, but also by increasing mutual investments - especially in the fields of tourism and services.”

He said bilateral trade last year was about US$15 billion - down from US$22 billion in 2012.

“This was due to the unfair embargos and sanctions against Iran. Rouhani's government will solve these problems with international initiatives. I want to emphasize that Turkey was with Iran in the difficult times, and it will be with Iran in the easy times,” he said.

'Reducing bureaucracy'
Minister added that a preferential trade agreement between the two, signed in January, would take trade between the two nations into a new era.

He said: "We will implement the agreement as soon as possible, after approval by both countries.

“We have already started to work on an agreement to reduce bureaucracy and non-tariff barriers, but our ultimate goal is to have a free-trade agreement between Iran and Turkey."

More than 100 Turkish businessmen came together with their Iranian counterparts at the Tehran forum to develop more business opportunities.

According to the TurkStat (Turkish Statistics Institute), Turkish exports to Iran in 2013 were worth US$4.2 billion and imports from Iran were valued at US$10.4 billion.

Turkey exports to Iran gold, gold-plated silver, iron and steel, textile yarn, fabrics, land transportation vehicles, electrical machinery and apparatus and appliances.

Iran's exports to Turkey coal and raw petroleum materials, natural gas, plastics, metals other than iron, and organic chemicals.
