Iran to make 'advanced' attack drones

Iran has begun making 'advanced' unmanned drones capable of carrying out 'assaults with high precision'

Ahmad Vahidi, the Iranian defence minister, opened two production lines for the manufacture of the aircraft, the Fars news agency reported.

The drones would be able to carry out "surveillance, detection and even assaults with high precision", the report said.

US Predator drones have killed hundreds of suspected terrorists in Pakistan in recent years. Iran's sworn enemy Israel uses drones for reconnaisance. But it was not immediately clear what purpose the Iranian drones would serve.

In the past week Iran has announced a spate of technological advances and military achievements in the run up to the 31st anniversary of the Islamic revolution on Feb 11.

On Sunday, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad deepened tensions with the West over Iran's atomic programme when he ordered scientists to enrich stockpiles of uranium to the higher level needed to produce nuclear power.

The West fears Iran harbours ambitions to build a nuclear bomb. Tehran insists it is seeking only to produce electricity for civilian purposes.

Iran opens production lines for modern drones
Mon, 08 Feb 2010 11:03:51 GMT

Iranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi has inaugurated two production lines for the manufacture of advanced unmanned aircraft to improve its defense capabilities.

"The two drones, named Raad and Nazir, are capable of carrying out surveillance, detection and even assaults with high precision," Vahidi said on Monday.

Vahidi also unveiled Iran's first domestically-built single-seat aircraft.

Addressing the inauguration ceremony, Iran's defense minister said the 175-kg double-engine plane, Faez, can be assembled within less than five minutes due to its light weight and attachable body.

"The plane has been successfully tested," he said and added that it would be mass-produced soon.

Iran on Sunday successfully tested the prototype of its first domestically-built stealth drone, called Sofreh Mahi.

"The drone, due to its physical attributes and the material used in its body, cannot be detected by any radar," Air Force Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh, the force's coordination deputy, said.

The technological and military achievements come on occasion of the 31st anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution in February 1979

By IRNA,

Tehran : Iran’s first home-built twin-engine single-person aircraft was unveiled Monday in the presence of Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the unveiling ceremony, the minister said that the ‘Faez’ (Victor) aircraft was completely built by experts of the ministry’s space industries.

The ceremony was held on the occasion of the 31st victory anniversary of Iran’s Islamic Revolution.

The 175-kilogram composites aircraft would travel a 1,500 km distance in three hours and with a maximum speed of 240 km per hour, Vahidi said.

He added that the plane is also capable of landing both in water and on the ground carrying various logistic, medical and postal cargos.

Faez has successfully passed all test flights, said the minister, adding that the aircraft had the ability to be upgraded to a double-person aircraft.

The brigadier general also inaugurated the production line for two home-built advanced drones of Ra’d (Thunder) and ‘Nazeer’ (Warner).

Vahidi said that the drones were designed to carry out patrolling, surveilling and fighting operations with high accuracy.
