Iran shows film of captured US drone

Iranian TV has shown the first video footage of an advanced US drone aircraft that Tehran says it downed near the Afghan border.

The film was captioned "RQ170 - advanced US spy plane" and carried on the Vision of the Islamic Republic of Iran Network 1 channel.

The images show Iranian military officials inspecting the aircraft, which appears to be largely undamaged.

US officials have acknowledged the loss of the unmanned aircraft.

Pentagon officials said they were concerned about Iran possibly acquiring information about the technology.

The drone, known as a Sentinel, is the first such loss by the US.

The US has no diplomatic relations with Iran and US affairs in the country are dealt with via the Swiss embassy in Tehran.

Iranian media said the foreign ministry had summoned the Swiss envoy to to express its "strongest protest over the invasion of a US spy drone deep into its airspace".

It said the ministry had asked for an immediate explanation and had demanded compensation from Washington.

Nato has said that an unarmed reconnaissance aircraft had been flying a mission over western Afghanistan late last week when its operators lost control of it.

However, reports in the Iranian media said the drone had been brought down by Iranian forces.

A report in The New York Times on Thursday said the "stealth" drone had been part of a US surveillance programme mapping Iran's suspected nuclear sites.

The US and its allies suspect Iran of secretly trying to build a nuclear weapon - something Tehran strongly denies.

However, a recent report by the UN's nuclear watchdog said Iran had carried out tests "relevant to the development of a nuclear device".

Wrong, most UAVs using satellite links do operate in the GHz range, similar to many radar systems. This is unsurprisingly because both systems require large bandwidths. In one case for pumping all that SIGINT and IMINT data through and the other for the requisite range and velocity sensitivity.

The control signal is almost certainly a highly directive C or X-band signal using a parabolic antenna (the hump you typically see on a UAV is caused by this) or an array on the aircraft. Either is difficult to intercept and jam on the UAV from the ground, the satellite could be vunerable but much more difficult to track and jam.

Most likely it was a mechanical function, but if Iran has some very skilled electrical and computer engineers these UAVs are slightly vunerable to deceptive attacks. ( This is unlikely I've read some papers recently on antenna research coming out of there and it's garbage)

As usual americans lied and denied iranians had it. Our govt and army could learn fromn Iran. I am so proud tonight of our iranian brothers

I think both Iran and US lied. Iran said they shot it down. It is obvious that the operator landed it. The only reason could be that, it was too valuable to loose and he thought he may have been landing it nearer to Afg than in Iran. As regards the US option of recovering it. These plans must have been made decades ago as no one plans an ops without fall back plans. End of the day Obama decided it was not worth another war when US logistics in Pakistan are virtually nil. It is a big loss for the US and windfall for the Iranians.

We love our new windfall. ;) Can't wait to give it to the hands of our reverse engineers and share the technology of this windfall with our Russian and Chinese comrades. lol

Your country operates the GPS - the first of its kind in the world :azn: so the operator didn't think nothing , because he wasn't in a position to do so ... How it could be ? When the beast of Kandahar was hacked ...
