The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has formally accepted Iran as the new member of the Eurasian political, economic, and security alliance at its 21st summit in Dushanbe.

"Perfectly pleased to announce that the permanent membership document of the Islamic Republic of Iran was approved by the leaders of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Dushanbe in the presence of our esteemed President," Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian tweeted Friday.

"This strategic membership has an important impact on the process of comprehensive cooperation between Iran in line with the policy of neighborhood with and pivot to Asia," he added.

what are the benefits?

none whatsoever.
Pakistan has not gained anything from the SCO. why would Iran get anything?
all the SCO is, a chance to get your picture taken and a way to meet leaders, (if they choose to attend the meeting that is).
you could do that bilaterally as well so there is nothing special about the SCO.

SCO is merely a political block with no active project under its belt. At best it is a good diplomatic mouth piece to present opinion at world stage. India is a big spoiler in this group and will be hurdle to any major efforts toward security and economic initiatives.

what are the benefits?
SCO is supposed to be an alternative to NATO.
But as long as India is in SCO, SCO is meaningless.
SCO and OIC are just good in doing diplomacy.

Otherwise both organizations are pretty useless.

I concur with you.
As long as India is in SCO, SCO is useless. The reason India is in SCO, is because of Russia. The reason Pakistan is in SCO is because of China.
In my opinion, Pakistan and China could ditch SCO and form their own military alliance and organization.

It is a platform for countries to communicate.

Pakistan and Tajikistan meeting is very important when you see it in terms of regional connectivity through Afghanistan for Pakistan and stability in Afghanistan.

Remember Tajikistan is the one which supported panjishir resistance.

What mattered for us was showing the middle finger to USA and its sanctions regime.

SCO population wise, is one of largest organizations in the world. Iran will try its best to communicate with member states and find out their needs reaching a suitable understanding from regional countries. It is an export opportunity and Iran can count on this big organization to advance its economic plans.

Iran is a petrochemical and also agricultural power in the region. SCO has the potential to introduce Iranian capabilities to this part of the world. Iran will have the capacity of nuclear technology along with its home developed NANO technology. The applications of nuclear and NANO technologies in medical, agricultural, petrochemical, electricity fields can be exported from Iran which are mostly developed when Iran was sanctioned.

What we have learnt from cooperating with western world, specially economically, is that these guys are bests at backstabbing not only us but also amongst themselves. They are culturally sneaky people having a long history of colonization. It doesn't mean we don't want to work with them. Point is limitting the country to western hemisphere has severe consequences. Something that our west worshiping reformists cannot comprehend.

SCO gained a huge importance after US withdrawal from Afghanistan and if Taliban gains trust of its neighboring countries specially Iran and Pakistan then the region can breath again. SCO will have a bright future.

Good to see Iran permanently joining this block. It may not be an EU or a NATO but it is also not mere coincidence that all SCO member states were on the same page regarding Afghanistan post the US withdrawal (barring India of course). SCO summits are a great way for leaders of the member states to interact on a regular basis and figure out potential wins for all parties involved.

In fact if the SCO is to develop into a stronger union it needs to get rid of spoiler states that will use the platform to cause controversy and restrict further integration between the member states. Much will probably come down to India's future weapons purchasing diplomacy. Moscow has a limit and if India continues to purchase US rather than Russian weaponry then the core on which Indo-Russian ties are built will disappear

Iran already did, 2 days ago president Raesi equipped Tajikistan university with much needed NANO technology (with some transfer technology so that they can partly build them there) that they where asking from other members but were not given

Pakistan should have impressed on China to give full SCO membership to both Turkiye and Iran simultaneously.

This is what Russia did for India when Pakistan was being given the full membership.

You all heard what happened yesterday when US dumped France and brought in Australia in an "Anglo alliance" against China...World is changing fast...I fully agree with Pakistani members that India is now the Squeaky Wheel in the SCO from security perspective ..When India joined SCO she was a real non-aligned nation but since then India has become aligned with devils (US and Israel). SCO will change soon as China and Russia realize the new alliances against them and it may become more of a military alliance rather than economics which in that case India will have to decide which side of the fence they sit...:undecided::undecided:
