Iran launches 'space' rocket

Iran has said that it launched a rocket designed to send its first homemade research satellite into orbit in the next year.

State television reported the rocket had blasted off but did not show the launch.

It had earlier shown footage of a rocket on a launch pad in desert terrain.
The satellite, called Omid (Hope), would be launched in the next Iranian year, which ends in March 2009.

"We need to have an active and influential presence in space," Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the president, said in a televised ceremony before the launch.

"Iran took its first step [to establish a presence in space] very strongly, precisely and wisely. Building and launching a satellite is a very important achievement."

The ability to put satellites into orbit could indicate an advance in the country's missile technology.

In November, Iran had built a new missile with a range of 2,000km, adding to the scope of its conventional arsenal.

Western experts say Iran rarely gives enough details to determine how significant its technology advances are.

They say much Iranian technology is based on modifications to equipment supplied by other countries, including China and North Korea.

Space centre launched

Meanwhile, Ahmadinejad inaugurated Iran's first space centre, which includes an underground control station and launch pad which was used to fire Omid into space.

Iran has been pursuing a space programme in the last few years and in October 2005, an Iranian Russian-made satellite was put into orbit by a Russian rocket.

But Omid would be Iran's first home-built probe and the first to be launched in Iran.

We need to improve our ties with Iran.
If you mean in general economic and political terms, I agree. If you are referring to Iran's space program, then know that Pakistan has tested space-rockets a few years ago and set its SLV launch by 2009.

The news is not in western media, I haven't been able to find any. :s

US showed its disappoinment in it. I wonder why? So now developing rockets for space programe is also considered as a threat then god bless the muslim nations all around the globe.

Looking at the statements released by White House, US is terming this launch as Ballastic Missile Test rather than a Rocket Launch for space programs and thus dissapointment....

American Statements :

1-''I saw this morning that Iran, again, tested a ballistic missile. It's unfortunate that they continue to do that because it further isolates the country from the rest of the world,'' said spokesperson Dana Perino

2- US State Department spokesperson Sean McCormack described the rocket launch as ''another troubling development.''

''The kinds of technologies and capabilities that are needed in order to launch ... a space vehicle for orbit are the same kinds of capabilities and technologies that one would employ for long-range ballistic missiles,'' he said.

now you know why !!!

No Prizes for Guessing on who was doing the countdowns to this launch

Iran Launches Rocket to Commemorate New Space Center- N.Y.Times

N.Y.Times is a modestly large western-media paper.:agree: All the news fit to print.

May the Iranian gov't live in interesting times.

Thanks, I more new soming in today.

Iran opens its first space centre, riling the US

TEHRAN (February 05 2008): Iran on Monday fired a rocket into space to mark the opening of its first space centre, triggering swift condemnation from the United States amid continued tensions over the Iranian nuclear drive. The space centre, located in the remote desert of western Iran, will be used to launch Iran's first home-produced satellite "Omid" (Hope) in May or June this year, officials said.

"We witness today that Iran has taken its first step in space very firmly, precisely and with awareness," declared President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as he gave the order for the rocket's launch.

"The evil and dominant system's most important instrument is humiliating people and nations by making them think that they are incapable," he said. The United States, which has led international efforts to pressure Iran to freeze controversial nuclear activities, said Tehran's activities in space risked further isolating the Islamic republic.

"I saw this morning that Iran, again, tested a ballistic missile. It's unfortunate that they continue to do that because it further isolates the country from the rest of the world," said White House spokeswoman Dana Perino.

The rocket launch is believed to be the second time Iran has tried to put an object into space after it claimed to have successfully fired a missile outside the atmosphere in February 2007. State television broadcast pictures of the launch of the rocket, which is dubbed Kavoshgar-1 but bore a close resemblance to Iran's longer-range missile Shahab-3.

The Shahab-3 has a range of 1,300 to 1,600 kilometres (800 to 1,000 miles), enough to put Tehran's arch regional foe Israel and US bases in the Gulf within reach. The new space centre includes an underground control centre and launchpad which will be used to fire Omid into space, followed by other planned satellites in the future, state media said.

The opening of the space centre comes as Iran has been trumpeting its progress in its nuclear programme, which the West fears could be used to make atomic weapons. Ahmadinejad has made Iran's scientific development one of the main themes of his presidency, asserting that the country has reached a peak of progress and no longer needs to depend on foreign states for help.

"No power can overcome the Iranian nation's will," he said. "The world must know that the Iranian nation will preserve the principles and ideals of the Imam (revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini) until the end."

State television made great play of the space centre opening, which comes amid celebrations for the 29th anniversary of the Islamic revolution. It repeatedly showed footage of the launch and played patriotic music. Iran has been pursuing a space programme for several years, and in October 2005 a Russian-made Iranian satellite was put into orbit by a Russian rocket.

The point you highlighted was the one actually i wanted to highligh myself, US already assumed it to be a ballistic missile, while it was just a mere rocket. Now we all know that Iran has already developed a ballistic missile system programe. Now if it really wanted to test fire a ballistic missile, it did not needed to disguise it with a rocket test, it could have simply fired a missile and stated so as done in the past with the test of shahaab.
The lack of trust on part of the West is just too much and that clouds their judgement to even take simpler things as WMD's and this kind of attitude leads nowhere but distruction. The same case that is happening with iran's nuclear programe dispite of the fact that in order to remove the worlds fear and doubts, Iran signed all the treaties to prove that it does not intend to develop nuclear weapons and IAEA can inspect them whenever they want, still US is trying to prove to the world the otherway. This is pathetic on part of the US. Every country has the right to develop technology as suites her needs and specially when it is not meant for weapons purpose.

Mark if you have the source. Please share.

I remember reading the interview of ex-cheif of SUPARCO, and he said that Pakistan would be able to launch satellites by its own by 2004, but it seems that has been delayed for a pretty long time.
