Iran holds talks with Beijing
Iran's most senior nuclear official, Saeed Jalili, arrived in Beijing on Thursday for talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi.
""Your visit this time is very important,"" Jiechi told Jalili before the talks. ""We attach great importance to China's relations with Iran,"" the British newspaper Guardian quoted Jiechi as saying.
Jalili agreed that the relationship between Iran and China was ""very important"", adding: ""It is very important for our two countries to cooperate on all the issues.""
The visit came a day after Beijing nodded to begin drafting a UN resolution imposing sanctions against Tehran over its nuclear program.
China reiterated on Thursday to continue to work for a ""peaceful resolution"" of the Iranian nuclear issue, according to Xinhua news agency.
China will continue to seek a diplomatic settlement to the Iranian nuclear issue through constructive efforts,"" said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang at a regular news briefing.
On Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton claimed the five permanent Security Council members, plus Germany, ""continue to be unified"" in talks on sanctions.
Officials with knowledge of the talks said an agreement to begin drafting a Security Council resolution had been reached in a telephone call involving representatives of the U.S., China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany on Wednesday.
China refused to comment on the sanctions on Thursday.
