According to Fars, he told the court he did have links to the CIA, but had never intended to harm Iran.

"I was deceived by the CIA... Although I was appointed to break into Iran's intelligence systems and act as a new source for the CIA, I had no intention of undermining the country," Fars quoted him as saying.

Mr Hekmati's family, who live in Arizona, say the charges against him are fabricated and that he was in Iran to visit his grandmothers.

His father, Ali Hekmati, said his son joined the US military in 2001 and served in the Marines, where he was an Arabic translator.

The sentence comes at a time of heightened tensions between Iran and the West.

Tehran has threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz - a key route from the Gulf through which 20% of the world's traded oil passes - if the US and EU introduce further sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programme.

US defence chiefs on Sunday warned that they would take action if Iran closed the strait.

"That's another red line for us and ... we will respond to them," Defence Secretary Leon Panetta told CBS's "Face the Nation" programme.

If an American was entering in Iran's Army i guess he would be considered badly from most Americans.
So i can understand the sort of feeling about it.

But i clearly don't appreciate and understand what is happening: this guy is going to be killed , when he was not even spy or working against Iran for an invasion or bombing (which Mek group is doing for exemple).

Explanation: when you become American and when you come back to Iran to see your family for a visit, you need to use the Iranian passport . So this guy was coming in Iran for this matter. But he is American. He is doing a job in USA that he has right to choose.
Is it something so terrible to work as translator in US army? that it needs to kill him???
Something wise would have been to not allow him come back in Iran. That's quite enough .

see he is saying it if i was not guilty no matter under howmuch pressure i would not say such things!
so he is traitor as he said and dead sentence is the result

so take care!

Well, if you are an Iranian and doing any work with US government specially in military it is better to forget about Iran completely and never go there. Though I guess there is a high possibility that he is a real spy. Maybe he can be exchanged in a spy for a spy deal. This would be better.

I'm not sure that he is a spy yet. I hope they wouldn't execute him any time soon, his case should be studied. Even if he works in the US Army only then he has every right to come to Iran and visit his family, but if he is a spy then the law must be applied to him which is execution sadly.

To decieve your nation in any capacity and to risk national security for personal gain or benefit is treason of the highest order. When committing such crimes its clear one must accept what comes with it if you get caught.
