Iran becomes India's second largest oil supplier, ahead of Saudi Arabia

New Delhi: Iran was the second-biggest oil supplier to Indian state refiners between April and June, India's oil minister Dharmendra Pradhan said on Monday, replacing Saudi Arabia as companies took advantage of steeper discounts offered by Tehran.

India, Iran's top oil client after China, shipped in 5.67 million tonnes or about 457,000 barrels per day (bpd) of oil from the country in the first three months of this fiscal year, Pradhan told lawmakers in a written reply.

He did not provide comparable numbers from the year-ago period. Data compiled by Reuters shows that India imported about 3.46 million tonnes, or about 279,000 bpd, from Iran between April and June last year.

State refiners, accounting for about 60 per cent of India's 5 million bpd refining capacity, had curbed imports from Iran last year in protest against Tehran's move to grant development rights for the giant Farzad B gas field to other parties.

The refiners - Indian Oil Corp, Chennai Petroleum Corp, Bharat Petroleum and its unit Bharat Oman Refineries Ltd, Hindustan Petroleum and Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals - shipped in 9.8 million tonnes of Iranian oil in 2017/18, about a quarter less than a year ago, Pradhan's reply stated.

For this fiscal year, the refiners had decided to almost double imports from Iran, which offered almost free shipping and extended credit period on oil sales.

Iraq continued to be the top oil supplier to India in the April-June period. New Delhi shipped in 7.27 million tonnes of oil from Iraq, while shipments from Saudi Arabia totalled 5.22 million tonnes, making it the third largest supplier, Pradhan's statement showed.

India and other major buyers of Iranian oil are under pressure to cut imports from the country after Washington in May withdrew from a 2005 nuclear deal with Tehran and decided to reimpose sanctions on the OPEC member.

Reuters reported last month that India had asked refiners to prepare for drastic reductions or even zero Iranian oil imports.

The first set of sanctions will take effect on Aug. 6 and the rest, notably in the petroleum sector, following a 180-day "wind-down period" ending on November 4.

"Indian refineries import crude oil from diverse sources including Iran, depending on technical and commercial considerations," Pradhan said, without elaborating if the refiners would cut imports from Tehran.

India's overall oil imports from Iran in June declined by about 16 per cent from May as refiners started weaning their plants off crude from Iran to avoid US sanctions.

Watch how fast Indian imports Iran will shrivel after this cut off date - all because Uncle Trump says so. And Modi will oblige Trump/Netanyu. Bye bye Iran.

India not Pakistan which can't resolve diplomatic issues. India has money to spend on both oil and weapons. Adn remains far better buyer than Pakistan.

It is certainly going to put Modi in a twist. Fill pockets with money or get trampled by Trump.

I think Iranian's are selling as much oil as they can till November and then Indian money will go straight to pure Texan shale oil.

Don't think so... there may be a reduction not complete cut off

India’s media have reported that the country has given the go-ahead to a plan to revive a banking mechanism that would allow payments to Iran for oil purchases as well as other trade activities.

India’s media have reported that the country has given the go-ahead to a plan to revive a banking mechanism that would allow payments to Iran for oil purchases as well as other trade activities.

The Indian Express reported that Iran’s Bank Pasargad had received an authorization to open a branch in Mumbai.

The authorization was accordingly conveyed to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) by India’s Finance Ministry.

The move - The Indian Express added in its report – would be crucial specifically in light of the returning US sanctions that would potentially choke channels to transfer cash to Iran among many other restrictions.

Iran is the third-biggest oil supplier to India, which, in turn, is the Islamic Republic’s top oil client after China.

The daily further added that the channel that would be created through Bank Pasargad would allow arrangements to settle trade in mutual currencies of both countries.

On the same front, it wrote that the Federation of Indian Export Organizations had earlier approached the RBI suggesting that they should allow the entry of Iranian banks into India to facilitate bilateral trade.

PressTV-India to let Iranian banks open branches
The Federation of Indian Export Organizations (FIEO) had asked the Reserve Bank of India to issue the licenses for five Iranian banks to open branches in India.

In the wake of US sanctions, India might explore the possibility of reviving a mechanism to settle oil payments involving Iran’s Rial and India’s Rupee that was in place between the two countries in the past.

The Rupee-Rial arrangement was used to buy oil from Iran before US sanctions were lifted against it three years ago. Under this mechanism, India paid in Euros to clear 55 per cent of its dues, while the remaining 45 percent payment was remitted in Rupees into accounts Iranian oil companies had with UCO Bank.

The presence of an Iranian bank in India would open up a significant financial channel that would ensure the smooth flow of funds between the two countries, added the daily.

PressTV-Embassy: Iran will work to ensure oil supply to India
As US sanctions loom, Iran’s Embassy in New Delhi says the Islamic Republic will do all in its power to ensure security of oil supplies to India.

India imports a large quantity of oil from Iran and has committed an investment of $500 million for the development of the crucial Chabahar port.

Elsewhere in its report, The Indian Express quoted sources as saying that two banks from Iran, Bank Pasargad and Parsian Bank, had applied to set up maiden branches in India, while another Iranian lender, Saman Bank, had sent an application to set up a representative office.

The government has so far cleared only the Tehran Stock Exchange-listed Bank Pasargad’s proposal for a branch in Mumbai, while the other Iranian banks’ plans are yet to get the green light, the unidentified sources said.

In May, US President Donald Trump announced that he would pull America out of a 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran and re-impose the sanctions that the deal had envisaged to be lifted.

He has already emphasized that the sanctions which would be imposed on Iran would be “at the highest level”.

The sanctions would include a universal ban on Iran over buying or acquiring US dollars as well as restrictions over purchases of crude oil from the country and investing in its oil sector projects.

On a related front, a senior US State Department official was quoted as saying recently that the countries purchasing oil from Iran should prepare themselves to completely stop the Iranian crude imports by November as Washington reimposes sanctions against Tehran.

RBI, FM, MOP&NG & MEA all are on the same page with regard to importing Oil from Iran. So, no matter whatever happen flow of Oil from Iran will not stop.

It is certainly going to put Modi in a twist. Fill pockets with money or get trampled by Trump.

Trump is going to make US an isolated state the rate at which he is hurling threats at EU, China, Canada, India and Germany.

There will be some concessions but not a complete stoppage.

US tried this under MMS who was the most inept PM India has seen in the last 40 years, behind IK Gujral.

Didn't work then; Trump can forget about it under Modi.

If EU pulls this through, Trump will suffer a lot of domestic fallout.

India can't have it both ways. You are either with us or against us. Soviet Union is dead, no more non-aligned status. Best case India bows, worst case India loses Chahabar and suffers sanctions and a total partnership with Pakistan.

Unlike Pakistan, I don't think India will have to face sanctions as India alongwith China & Russia are on same page regarding relations/business with Iran.

With Pakistan's total alignment with China sanctions won't affect Pakistan either. They will be annoying but ineffective.

Trade between Iran and Pakistan can't be compared with Trade with Iran to China or India as unlike Pakistan other two are dependent on Iranian oil and US can't compensate it.
