Southeastern part of Iran, so close to Pakistan. Probably a message too asymmetrical groups that are operating there.

A high-ranking military commander says the Iranian Army's Ground and Air Forces will conduct a massive exercise in late November.

Commander of the Iranian Army's Ground Forces Brigadier General Ahmad-Reza Pourdastan said on Monday that the capabilities of armored and airborne units will be tested in the drill, codenamed Qamar-e Bani Hashem.

He added that asymmetric warfare tactics will be practiced during the war games, and various armored, artillery, airborne and electronic units of the Iranian Army's Ground Forces will participate in the military exercise.

On September 23, Pourdastan stated that week-long Qamar-e Bani Hashem drill will be staged in the southeastern part of Iran in an area covering 250,000 square kilometers.

He stressed that advanced domestically designed and manufactured weapons will be tested during the exercise.

Why near the border? Iran might as well conduct the drills on Pakistani side of the border. It's not like as if Pakistan mans the border with Iran - it's wide open.

that border is not as open as you guys may think , Pakistan has substantial amount of troops there , it least it was the case about years ago when I was there .
