A confidential UN report has revealed the Iran has been shipping weapons to Yemen rebels since 2009.
UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - Iran has been shipping weapons to Yemen s Huthi rebels since at least 2009, according to a confidential UN report, indicating that Tehran s support dates back to the early years of the Shiite militia s insurgency.

The report by a panel of experts was presented to the Security Council s Iran sanctions committee last week as the United Nations seeks to broker an end to the Saudi-led air campaign in Yemen and a return to peace talks.

The panel of experts reported on the findings of an investigation into the 2013 seizure by Yemeni authorities of an Iranian ship, the Jihan, that was carrying weapons.

The information collected by the experts "suggests that the Jihan case follows a pattern of arms shipments to Yemen by sea that can be traced back to at least 2009," said the report seen by AFP.

One instance saw an Iranian fishing vessel attempt to secretly ship hundreds of anti-tank and anti-helicopter rockets to the rebels.

"The analysis further suggests that the Islamic Republic of Iran was the origin of these shipments and that the intended recipients were the Huthis in Yemen or possibly in some cases further recipients in neighboring countries," it added.

"Current military Iranian support to Huthis in Yemen is consistent with patterns of arms transfers going back to more than five years to date."

Iran denies accusations that it is meddling in Yemen and instead accuses Saudi Arabia of carrying out a military "aggression" against the troubled country after it launched an air campaign on March 26.

The Saudi-led coalition is seeking to restore the authority of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi, who was forced to flee Yemen after the Huthis overran the capital Sanaa and advanced on the southern city of Aden, Hadi s stronghold.

The experts report details six other incidents involving Iranian ships, five of which are said to have been carrying weapons bound for Yemen.

In one of the cases, the panel said it had received conflicting information about whether there were weapons on board the vessel.

In an incident dating back to April 2009, the crew of an unnamed Iranian vessel loaded crates of weapons onto Yemeni boats in international waters which were then delivered in batches and taken to a farm in Yemen for use by the Huthis.

And an Iranian fishing vessel was seized by Yemeni authorities in February 2011 carrying 900 Iranian-made anti-tank and anti-helicopter rockets intended for the rebels, the report said.

Iran is prohibited from selling weapons under a UN resolution adopted in 2007 that also instructs all countries to take action to prevent any arms flow from Iran.

The Huthis were originally based in northern Yemen and have long complained of marginalization in Yemen, fighting several wars with the Sanaa government from 2004 to 2009

nothing new.

Immediately after the Religious revolution, Iran started funding Shia militants even in Pakistan.

Many people don't this was a trigger for Wahabi-Shia wars in Pak.

well, if we have done it, I would be more than happy. It's a well known fact that Saudis (wahhabi terrorists) have always tried to annihilate the houthies.
but this report is based on some false news like seizure of Jihan which even Yemeni authorities officially apologized for the false accusation:

I am sure these sunnis in your country blowing people to pieces are there because of Iran. Your wahabi masters have badly infected your people heads. You worship everything about them including the lies that come out of their mouth.
Go ahead and show us how Iran is supporting shia militant in you country.

good good. Good job by Powerful Islamic IRAN.

these wahabis did everything to suppress zaidia in Yemen. Yemen was totally zaidia till the rise of wahabism that infested yemen with immigrant. even the traitor hadi is not infact Yemeni but an immigrant and imposed by saud.

saudi spoiled every possible deal in yemen to suppress shias and ensure to block politically as it will bring death to wahabiism. Thanks to Allah swt wahabiism has now reached its deadend.

Meray piyaray bhai

Zia aka Pak army could never start a "WAR" against Shia citizens. Never did, Never will.

Please quit smoking weird stuff, you are talking like Tafu mota chor while blaming Pak army.

Sorry to see.

please do not do this when the things are no more secret. All know what happened when Zia tried to impose the Hanafi rules on the shias and how they protested and shut down the central secretariat for several days.

It is the state institutions that were used to target shias and marginalize them. Zia personally issued orders for the release of many anti shia terrorist leaders at the behest of the saudi embassy and this includes the first anti shia leader haq Nawaz jhangvi who infact was not jhangvi. Zia openly gave orders to state institutions not to be strict with this anti-shia leader. This is how the first anti terror outfit was created by the State by Zia and that was operated by the Saudi embassy. Zia promised Raja Zafarul Haq and haq Nawaz that at State level ISI and military will control Shias and at public level sipah e sahaba will confront shias. All incharge at Punjab police stations were decided by terrorists haq Nawaz. None of the Shia killer was ever arrested by the State.

Today all these terrorists who were dangerous to the civilians became dangerous to the State institutions too and still operate with foreign help.

The whole world is seeing how these terror outfits who once operated freely right under the nose of the state institutions are now being confronted by the state itself.

Therefore please do not distort history and deny proofs. There is so much of documents and proofs that it will take years to post all on net. we should accept the past mistakes as how some generals violated the constitution and imposed their own rule over the country and spread corruption and foreign wahabi influence.

look meray piaray bhai,

I am not arguing in favor of "islamization" in fact this idea is the worst thing ever happen to Pakisstan.

The horrors against our minority community Ahmediya, our Pakistani-christians, our Pakistani-Hindus, and off course Pakistani-Shias was unparalled. We all suffered greatly in the hands of this horrible implementation of Islamization.

so the question to me is never to mix different things.

Iranian Ayatullahs armed and supported Pakistani Shias first much before Sunni extremists came into being.

This incident predates all Jangvi shangvi plague.

Back then, I heard my father talk to his Shia family friends about the dangers of Khomeni.
But then my family was always "religious inclusivists" and thus talked against Mawdoodi's campaing against our Pakistani Ahmadiya-brothers.

I am not sure if you saw your prarents ever protesting against Khomeni Did they ever? Just curious!

Not soon after Quetta imambargah incident happened, where Shia militants fired at Pakistani police.

Bottom line:

Pakistani Sunni community must stand for the rights of all minorities aka Ahmadiya, Hindus, Christians, Shias in our beautiful country.
