Iran agrees to Brazil’s nuclear fuel swap offer

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has agreed “in principle” to an offer by Brazil for exchange of nuclear fuel, reports said on Wednesday.

The agreement came in a phone conversation between Ahmadinejad who was in New York and his Venezuelan counterpart Hugo Chavez.

The offer by Brazil’s president for exchange of nuclear fuel formed the cornerstone of talks between Ahmadinejad and Chavez in which Iran agreed in principle with the proposal.

Ahmadinejad said Iran and Brazil will now work out the technical details of the offer.

In a joint press conference with his Brazilian counterpart Celso Amorim in Tehran on April 27, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said, “Brazil is interested in playing a role in settling Iran’s nuclear issue appropriately.”

Iran is currently enriching uranium to 20 percent to fuel the Tehran research reactor which produces isotopes for cancer patients.

Iran has insisted that since it does not trust the West, it wants the exchange to take place simultaneously on Iranian territory under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

In an exclusive interview with IRNA, Amorim said Brazil may even consider conducting the fuel exchange on its territory.

“At this point in time, there is no proposal, but if we receive such a proposal, it could be examined,” Amorim said when asked whether Brazil might make such an offer.
