I am an ardent critic of the right wing Hindu lunatics who go around burning missionaries, killing and persecuting Muslims and other minorities - if you look at my history I have gotten into arguments about these with fellow Indians on PDF itself. India has major problems - I'd be a hypocrite to deny that. I also believe that both India and Pakistan should rather spend money on education and healthcare rather than confronting each other. Minorities in the entire region of South Asia are persecuted - all sorts of minorities in India; Ahmadiyas and other minorities in Pak, Hindus in Bangladesh, ethnic Tamils in Sri Lanka - the sooner all of us accept that this is a major problem - the more likely it is that at some point these minorities will get a chance to live in peace and with dignity.

And none of this has remotely to do with licking Arab balls and allowing them to go around treating any part of the world as their personal playground to go hunting. If this happened in India - I would be as critical, if not more. And I criticized your Govt. for going against the wishes of its people. I would gladly do that in India too.

It is a crime to go against the court order. It is a crime to run a bird to extinction for the sake of greed! It is a crime to hunt on another's land the SAME ANIMAL you support on your land..Why are our birds inferior that they dont need to be protected? It is a crime to hunt ENDANGERED species!

Every one is killing this bird, even without license... can you stop Balawal or Gillani's son from hunting? They will not pay a penny, will use Sindh govt. heli and may kill some humans in the process too.

As I said hunting is sport, many of my friends do it in Pakistan and they hunt migratory birds, I don't support it but fighting with them over the issue of duck hunting is absurd.

State has put a court order against its hunting...State has provided safety for them by this court order...NO ONE SHOULD BE ABOVE THE LAW!

The houbara bustard is a highly regarded bird, but perhaps it too would be surprised to learn that it is a cornerstone of Pakistani foreign policy.

That rather astonishing claim has been made as part of the federal government’s attempt to have overturned a Supreme Court edict last month banning any governments, provincial or federal, from issuing special hunting permits.

With the migratory season beginning next month and Arab leaders likely keen on securing their hunting permits here, the government appears to have been prompted into action, but in a typically ham-fisted manner.

o be sure, there are several legal issues here, both regarding the status of the houbara bustard and whether the Supreme Court order overstepped its authority by issuing the blanket ban.
While local classifications can be manipulated by the authorities it is worth noting that the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species classifies the particular variant of the bustard hunted in Pakistan as ‘threatened’ — a classification below ‘endangered’ and ‘critically endangered’.

Moreover, the government’s review petition appears to make a reasonable case that wildlife laws grants the classifying authority to provincial governments. There is little indication that the existing classification of the bird in Balochistan, Punjab and Sindh is contrary to scientific evidence.

The problem is not that limited hunting of the houbara bustard is unacceptable. The problem is that — as the federal government has so crassly indicated in its review petition — governments here are keen to oblige Arab royals and leaders. That means issuing excessive hunting permits and doing nothing to ensure hunting parties comply with the conditions of the permits and not grossly exceed their quotas.

It was those excesses that led to a petition against the Sindh government’s decision to grant hunting permits last year and appears to have prompted first the Sindh High Court and then the Supreme Court into protecting a bird whose numbers are declining.

It remains to be seen how the Supreme Court will deal with the federal government’s objections to the hunting ban. Already, however, in linking the ban to struggles on the foreign policy front with the Gulf and Middle Eastern countries, the government has opened itself to ridicule.

A far more sensible approach would have been to submit, along with the core legal arguments, a detailed plan on how the provincial and federal governments would ensure that only limited hunting in strict compliance with licence conditions will be allowed and what fresh conservation steps will be taken to protect the migratory birds.

The houbara bustard is a national treasure, not a cornerstone of foreign policy. Perhaps the PML-N needs to rethink it approach to policy, local and foreign — it increasingly appears feckless in both.

We have been learning in our school textbook, in the writings of the journalists and Tv shows that ''our ties with Gulf countries are based on Islamic brotherhood and shared religious tradition''. Now it is an odd learning that our foreign policy depends on the merciless killing of an endangered bird.

It seems that these particular permits are issued to nurture personal ties with the Gulf royal. I have never heard that Saudi Arabia ever inviting any Pakistani dignitary to hunt in its own reserve. A policy that rests on birds is no policy at all.

Back to NS again!!!!! This practice has been going on for like 50 years. Explain to me, WHY NS is the only one to blame on here? And like I said, Tareen and IK take people hunting too. So why don't you write about them? They are killing many types of birds, and drinking booze which is against your own religion and culture and all. So why not write about them also?
