Xinjiang raisins made by drying grapes in clay structures

Local growers in Hami, Northwest China's Xinjiang are busy drying grapes for the production of raisin recently as grapes have entered the harvest season.

The grapes are to be stored in the hollowed-out clay structures for the following months. The hot wind from the Xinjiang deserts will dry them into raisin for better preservation and taste.

I had a lot of Xinjiang grapes for the summer, sooooo sweet!

Do the stores have labels showing which province the produce come from?
Mostly labeled. Like apples from Shandong, pineapple from Hainan/Taiwan, honey oranges from Jiangxi.

And anything from Taiwan province ? :)
Of course, a lot of kinds, but a little bit pricey. I like Taiwan's juice, 芭乐(芭樂)

how much is grape over there? It's around $3 CAD/lb here or 19 rmb
It depends. Good grapes from Xinjiang(only in Xinjiang, peel is great) about 10yuan/jin, top kinds can be very expensive. Normal grapes from other provinces, can be 3yuan/jin.

Rare crane sees population growth on Qinghai-Tibet plateau
Source:Xinhua Published: 2015-9-15 18:59:52

The population of endangered black-necked cranes has been growing steadily over the past three decades on the Qinghai-Tibet plateau.

In Longbao nature reserve in northwest China's Qinghai Province, the number of black-necked cranes has increased from 22 in 1984 when the reserve was founded to 216 this year.

The state-level reserve covers 10,000 hectares, at an altitude of 4,200 meters. Black-necked cranes are the main protected species.

"The poaching of the 1990s has almost disappeared through surveillance and the wide participation of local herders in conservation," said Purbu, deputy head of a station on the reserve, who has worked here for 26 years.

In neighboring Tibet, the population of the rare crane has increased from less than 3,000 in 1995 to around 7,000 this year, said a senior regional forestry official.

Of the 15 crane species in the world, the black-necked variety was the last to be identified as they mainly move between the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau.

In 1876, a Russian explorer chanced upon the crane at Qinghai Lake, northwest China's Qinghai Province, and published news of his sighting.

10-year-old boy likely to be youngest supernova discoverer
Source:Xinhua Published: 2015-9-15 16:27:09

A 10-year-old amateur astronomer in east China has possibly discovered a new supernova, and may be the youngest person in the country to make such a discovery.

On Saturday, Liao Jiaming, a primary school student from Hefei, capital of Anhui Province, found an unusual bright spot while scanning several black and white photographs of the Universe in an online project.

The pictures were taken by Xingming Observatory in the far western Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The popular supernova project is a citizen science program backed by Xingming and the Chinese Visual Observatory.

The photos had been browsed by several other amateurs, but nothing had been spotted. Liao's observation results were the sixtieth set he has submitted to the system. None of his previous results found a supernova.

"I want to find a star to be named after me," said Liao. "I like watching the starry sky, but cannot see them at night in the city. I like looking at pictures of them."

He has examined more than 8,000 photographs on the system since joining in the project last month, scrutinizing star pictures almost every night during the summer vacation.

"The discovery gives me more confidence. I hope to discover more supernovas," he said.

Gao Xing, founder of the Xingming Observatory, said Liao's find is very likely to be a supernova and after calculation, probably around 220 million light-years from Earth. He has submitted the discovery to the International Astronomical Union (IAU) for confirmation.

When stars reach the end of their life, they collapse in on themselves in an explosion called a supernova that can outshine an entire galaxy.

Thousands of supernovas have been observed, but the majority of them were found by computers, said Kong Xu, a professor of astronomy at China Science and Technology University in Hefei.

In 2013, another ten-year-old, a Canadian, became the youngest person to discover a supernova, according to the professor, who said he could not judge through experience, what him Liao had discovered is a supernova or not. "It has to be confirmed by spectrum tests."

"Though it may have no significant research value, public participation in the search project raises the people's interest in astronomy," he said.

Construction has started on a park at the site of ancient humans ruins in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, local authorities said Friday.

The Karub Ruins Park, located in Qamdo City, will allow visitors to learn about the plateau's prehistoric civilization, according to Yungzhung Dawa, head of the city's cultural heritage bureau.

With a total investment of 120 million yuan (about 18.8 million US dollars), the project will replicate scenes from the lives of Tibetans' ancestors from 4,000 to 5,000 years ago.

The first-phase project includes an exhibition hall where pictures of the ruins of ancient houses will be displayed.

The Karub ruins were found in 1977 and put under state protection in 1996. Three excavations have been conducted on an area covering 3,040 square meters of ruins since their discovery. They are the best-preserved Neolithic ruins on the Qinghai-Tibet plateau.
