Renowned Japanese wrestler Antonio Inoki is arriving in Pakistan on a goodwill visit in connection with 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. 2012 is a special year as Pakistan and Japan are celebrating 60 years of their diplomatic relations. Inoki is famous among Pakistani people because of his wrestling events in Pakistan during the 70s and 80s era. He fought a bout with well-known Pakistani wrestler Akram Pehlwan back in 1976. Inoki had great respect for Akram Pehlwan whom he defeated at National Stadium in Karachi 36 years ago. Now he wants to visit and offer prayers at his grave. Inoki is visiting Pakistan on the invitation of Pakistan government. He will visit Peshawar and Lahore. He will also be holding wrestling events in both the cities. “I hope my visit will contribute to deepen the friendship and trust between the two countries and also help in bringing peace and stability in the region,” Inoki said in a statement.

Lahore: Punjab assembly deputy speaker and Chief organiser Punjab Sports Festival Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan says renowned Japanese wrestler Antonio Inoki would arrive in Lahore on 30th November.

Nearly four decades after his bouts with Pakistani hulks, Antonio is coming as part of goodwill celebrations of 60 years of Pak-Japanese diplomatic relations.

In 1976 Antonio was challenged by Pakistani wrestler Akram aka “Akki” and he came to Pakistan for the encounter. He was surprised to see nearly 50,000 spectators turn up for the match at the National Stadium Karachi.

Rana said that Antonio and 10 other Japanese wrestlers would have free style wrestling match on 2 December with local wrestlers in national hockey stadium.

Rana further said that after success of Punjab Sports Festival, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) decided to organise National T20 in Lahore. “We will provide full security to T20 participants,” Rana added.

In 1976 Antonio was challenged by Pakistani wrestler Akram aka “Akki” and he came to Pakistan for the encounter. He was surprised to see nearly 50,000 spectators turn up for the match at the National Stadium Karachi.

The Japanese wrestler embraced Islam in 1990 and his recent visit is an attempt to strengthen ties between the Pakistan and Japanese people.

The Japanese wrestler would take part in the International Sports and Peace Wrestling Festival to mark the 60 years of sporting relations between Pakistan and Japan, the Punjab Sports Board (PSB) said.

Inoki and 10 other Japanese wrestlers will have free style wrestling match on 2 December with local wrestlers in national hockey stadium.
