The great tea robbery: How our cuppa wouldn't exist if an amazing Victorian hadn't stolen the secret from China's warlords

Now, in the likely event that you are at this very moment drinking tea - likely because, as a nation, we pour 150 million cupfuls down our throats every day - you might care to give a nod to the memory of a tall and lean Scotsman by the name of Robert Fortune, a forgotten hero for the millions of us who swear by the amber nectar, the 'liquid jade', the cuppa, a brew, char.

Fortune was a seeker of the exotic, an explorer and a student of plants, just like his Victorian contemporary and fellow botanist, Charles Darwin, who is much discussed at present on the 150th anniversary of the publication of his seminal work On The Origin Of Species.

But where Darwin discovered the key to life, it was the little-known Fortune we can thank for making it infinitely more pleasurable and relaxing.

Brit favorite: Tea drinking in Britain could have died out if it wasn't for the efforts of a Victorian adventurer

Camellia sinensis - tea - was his favourite species and the closely guarded secrets of its origins were what he sought, found and then stole, to the benefit of us all.

What he pulled off, according to author Sarah Rose, in a new book that gives Fortune his proper place in history, was the greatest theft of trade secrets in the history of mankind.

They seem to be proud of it. :partay:

Comparing with China, China is 10x worst. Stealing technology from Japan and claiming that is yours is the shamest thing. You people have no shame. I could careless what you people think. Most of the great Scientists are from the US. USA has done more goods than your Chinese government has done to your people. Stop being so stupid. Go to my block list.

But of course, China can only steal things from USA that is because China wants to be like the USA. It's too bad, one thing is certain, you will never be the USA.

Most of them are anti-china propaganda. If they think we have violated their IP right, they should have sued us in the court instead of sturring up anti-China emotion by using rootless accusation.
We are devoloping too fast, someone get jealous.

Are you stupid? I am anti-communist. I am Pro-USA, pro-Democracy. I will continue to do what I like in regards with China hacking and stealing US's tech whether you like it or not. Stealing other people's hard work is a crime. You have seen nothing yet. Things are getting even better soon. You are going down, son.

USA prosper by pirating from Europe and similarly Japan industrialize by pirating from USA. The worst is Israel, the Jews simply stole every single blueprint in the name of "legalize technology transfer", and no white man is going to voice anything about it.

Looking at your ratings, no one really give a damn about your opinion.

@mike jones I have to hand it to you. You must have really really really hate mainland China with your entire being. Probably one of the most extreme China-haters in PDF.
He is just a loser :D

You should protest China's stealing the US tech and burn yourself publicly to show your empathy. Then you will most probably be inscribed as the 51st star on the US flag.

Go boy!

USA! USA!

Did China hurt you in your childhood or something?
Some Chinese kid beat him up last year.

Very easy to 'steal' US technology it seems
Apparently. Chinese scientist working in high tech US firms can just download the readily available non-password protected blue prints of Virginia Class submarine, burn it to a CD and walk out the door.

I am sure they have a high rank accomplice who leaves confidential messages here and there, and thinks you need a mop to clean your inbox.

Hillary Clinton shrugs off question about whether she 'wiped' her server clean | Daily Mail Online
According to CNN, Fox , etc it is that simple for anyone to steal top secret submarine and F-22 blue print! LOL

The computer with the blue print is readily available for Chinese scientist, lol. Just remember to bring a blank CD

Hilary, who gives a **** about that fat bitch? Billy C never received any head from her that's why he went to the intern , lol

1. China didn't stole F35-----our plane doesn't cost 200 million apiece.
2. The initial tech transfer for Chinese high speed rail technology comes from Germany in early 00s. Nobody who is the least bit tech aware should be mistaken that. Of course, modern day Chinese high speed rail technology is developed on its own.
3. Didn't US later reported that the accusation of Chinese professor stealing secret to be false, because, hehe, FBI doesn't "understand" tech.
U.S. Drops Charges That Temple University Professor Sought to Give Tech Secrets to China - WSJ
4. And I would like to repeat the question very eloquently asked by Huan "Did China hurt you in your childhood or something?" and I would like to add my own question "Please show me on the doll where the bad China-man touched you".

And get this, they are implying that US top level military secret are stored on computers connected to the internet and accessible by hackers from halfway across the planet. To be honest, I think this is a bigger insult to US military.

Why China still cant land on Mars and beyond or landing on Moon already or launching a "hubble space telescope"?
Why China still lags behind USA cars?
Why China is behind USA in making many consumer products like milk and its derivatives; cosmetics; food processing; farm produce like better grapes, berries; soft drinks, wine and liquor, sound systems, best guitars, Steinway & Sons pianos ... etc etc

I guess all of the about companies or orgs have installed much better security software that Chinese hackers cant get into, correct? Or the companies or orgs like Pentagon and its weapponry manufacturers cant afford buying a security system against hackers because all the money has been spent on R and D?

You've spent billions for a house with another few billions of treasures kept inside the house but paying few hundred dollars for door locks. Isnt it ridiculous?

Of course. Lots of white American 'traitors' have a hand in helping gives out U.S. state secrets to competitors.

The whole concept that you can read a few documents and instantly know how to do it is bogus anyway.

I have said this a few times already, the actual transition from engineering theory to finished product take decades. You think the research on radar absorb and aerodynamics are done recently? Wrong, much of this stuff is open source and done half a century ago. The actual difficulty of making them a reality lay within the repeated practice in making them. If a country can actually "copy" a piece of sophisticated technology by reading a few documents, chances are that country already have the infrastructure and technological understanding of the technology, which means they are probably very close to obtain it anyway. (To be fair, a lot of technological "advancement" isn't actually advancement, but rather re-application/re-adaptation of the existing ones. In this case, a competitor already possessing the technology and the supporting infrastructure can develop their own by simply examining the finished product. Such cases are especially common in software or chip industry. This is really what reverse engineering is all about. Though for sophisticate projects such as fighter development, such a case is rather unlikely due to the sheer amount of variables involved.)

This is easily observed in actual tech transfer deals to a country without the infrastructure or understanding. Such projects often takes years for recipient to build the appropriate facilities, then they have to spend years to be trained in both understanding and actual operation with full support of the provider and then it takes some more years for them to get comfortable with its operation and maintenance.

BTW, why on earth would anyone think Chinese planes takes after American ones? Chinese military aircraft shares a common ancestor with Russian ones. They are both descendants of the USSR MiG/Sukhoi family of aircrafts.

this is a fallacy. you cant just steal someone stuff and when get caught you argue that my stuff got stolen too. is that kind of practice exist in china? not to mention the british admit what they get while the china just shameless cover up. another the thing is when talk about stealing, faking, in china is not a few cases but a whole culture of stealing and faking everything. when talk about stealing the question is how much you steal and how many times you steal and what you steal. its not, hey somebody just stole my cheap dell laptop so i should go bestbuy and steal a mac as compensate, and when i got caught i just argue well that how it happen.
