Infosys, Tata ink deal with NSDC to impart skills to J&K youth - The Times of India
NEW DELHI: A public-private sector initiative to generate 40,000 jobs for qualified youth from Jammu and Kashmir over five years, will get corporates to focus on 'difficult areas' of the state rather than hiring people only from Srinagar and Jammu, besides ensuring a minimum respectable salary of Rs.20,000 per month for trainees absorbed.
Under the special industry initiative scheme, cleared by the Cabinet last week, big industrial houses and corporates will join hands with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) to induct graduates, PGs and professionals from J&K for training in special skill at their facilities across India.
Among the corporates and chambers that have evinced interest in the scheme are Infosys, Essar, Tata, Ficci and Assocham. NSDC will now liaise with business houses to get a commitment on the number of persons they would train under the five-year scheme.
The government will bear the cost of training, boarding and lodging (up to Rs.2.50 lakh per candidate) of the J&K trainees taken in by the corporates, who will then be incentivised to absorb them. As part of the incentive, the government will reimburse 50% of the training cost for each of the J&K youth absorbed by the company.
"The government, in effect, will be bearing 75% of the financial burden incurred on corporate training of each young man absorbed by the company. Either way, the scheme will offer the J&K youth exposure to the best training facilities across India and arm them with professional skills that they would not have had access to sitting in J&K," said a senior official of the MHA, which, along with the J&K government , will assist the NSDC in implementation of the scheme.
The scheme, based on the recommendations of an expert panel headed by C Rangarajan, chairman of economic advisory panel to the prime minister, targets the nearly 1.15 lakh unemployed youth in J&K holding a minimum graduate degree. To make the scheme fair and broad-based, NSDC will ensure that the corporates go hunting for prospective trainees not just in Srinagar and Jammu but also to difficult areas like Baramulla, Uri, Doda, Rajouri.
Also, for the youth who fail to be absorbed after their training, NSDC will set up a placement cell and track employment opportunities in skills acquired by them. "The emphasis of the project is to get a respectable and well-paying job for qualified young men, preferably with a monthly salary of Rs.20,000," an MHA official said.
