ISLAMABAD: The government on Monday claimed that inflation had been curtailed in the country and it fallen from 15.6 per cent to 12.9 per cent.
Speaking to the media after the federal cabinet meeting, Information Minister Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan said the loans of the State Bank had also been reduced.
She said that the cabinet was told that external financing during the past six months has also fallen.
The secretary finance briefed the cabinet about reasons of inflation which included global recession and price hike of food and non-food items, she added.
Ministry of Information in collaboration with Ministry of Finance would share detailed information about increase in consumer price of commodities with media soon, the minister said.
To a question, Awan said that the PPP leadership always followed politics of reconciliation.
She said that despite political differences, we have to keep national interests over political interests.
No doubt there are hurdles in the way of politics of reconciliation, but we have to overcome these hurdles, the minister said.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani rejected any confrontation between state institutions saying the government was committed to democracy and constitutionalism and believed in the sovereignty of parliament and independence of judiciary.
This cabinet unanimously dispels the impression that our government is in any mood of confrontation with any state institution, Gilani told the cabinet.
He said the government was functioning within the domain defined by the Constitution and fully respected the decisions of the superior judiciary.
Gilani said an atmosphere of uncertainty was being created by certain quarters about the possibility of confrontation between state institutions.
The premier cited that the ruling party during its 40 years of struggle had stood for protection of state institutions and will not in any way entangle and intrude in the ambit of any other state institution.
Gilani said the nation was horrified and shocked over the murder of Shahbaz Bhatti.
This brutal act of terror has not only tarnished the image of Pakistan but has seriously dented our agenda of creating interfaith harmony.
Terming his assassination a national loss, Gilani said investigation of the case will look into all aspects including the security lapses and those held responsible would not go unpunished.
Lapses should not be ignored and those held responsible for any slackness on their part should be taken to task, Gilani said.
He also apprised the cabinet about his meeting with Marc Grossman, the US Representative on Afghanistan and Pakistan.
He was reminded that long term Pakistan-US relations cannot be adversely affected by isolated acts of individuals and the two countries should remain focused on eliminating the bane of extremism from this region, the prime minister said.
Gilani also informed the cabinet about a number of agreements and memoranda of understanding with friendly countries.
