Indus civilization's ALLEGED true discoverer was a Gangadeshi.

'Banerji robbed of credit for Indus findings'

KOLKATA: In a new book, 'Rakhal Das Banerji: The Forgotten Archaeologist', author P K Mishra has explored the “blatant theft of the credit for discovery of the Indus Valley Civilization“. Mishra also delivered a lecture at the Indian Museum on the topic.

“The accused is John Marshall, whose contribution to Indian archaeology is immense. He was the longest serving director-general of Archaeological Survey of India from 1902 to 1928,“ Mishra told TOI.

“The first report on the discovery of Mohenjo Daro, submitted by Banerji in 1920, was suppressed by Marshall. So were the subsequent reports and the final one in 1922 which Marshall edited and used as the basis of `Mohenjo-Daro and the Indus Civilization' -a monumental volume,“ he added.

“It was a blatant theft of intellectual property right, hard earned by a young Indian archaeologist, by his boss,“ Mishra said. Records say during 1918-22, Banerji carried out a five-season excavation at Mohenjo Daro. “The world knows Marshall discovered the civilization's ruins and it is taught in institutions. Banerji is an insignificant footnot." he pointed out.

“Marshall did not know much about Mohenjo Daro till May 1924. He first visited the site only in February 1925. Marshall took direct charge of the excavation from winter 1925-26. By that time, Banerji had done all the work a discoverer should have done,“ said Mishra.

Banerji had written to Suniti Kumar Chatterjee, another intellectual icon of the time -“See, they (the British government) will not allow me to publish anything on Mohenjo Daro. But you can write something. I am handing over to you all the material I have and all photographs. You just write something on it and publish my interpretations. This may be a record for future generation,“ Mishra's book reveals.

Banerji's brilliance was recognised by British officers when he joined ASI in 1917 as a 19-year-old. He not only became a blue-eyed boy to Marshall, he was elevated to the post of supe rintendent of archaeology of Pune Division in 1922. But the final report of the discovery of Mohenjo Daro changed the colour of this bonhomie. Marshall turned hostile. Banerji was shunted out to Indian Museum.

It was the British that discovered the ruins of IVC. Who exactly set up the darned Archaeological Survey of India? It was English set up by the British Raj. Yeh which language do you think the word "archaeology is from"? English. So what if one of the pen pushers or in this case shovel pusher was Gangadeshi?

Actually Banerji was site incharge and he was notorius for beating up sindhi laborurers for being lazy during excavation.

That is typical South Asian bullshat trait. The boss will beat the foreman, the foreman will beat about the workers, the workers will beat up the servants, the servants will beat up the wives and the wives will beat up the kids. Shits drips down.

By that logic, the Sindhi man Rajeev Motwani has nothing to do with the invention of Google. By your logic Sindhi man Rajeev Motwani was merely a dispensable staff in a company founded and run by Larry Page and Sergei Brin.

I can't comment on this Sindhi man you mention but the point is even if this Gangadeshi had decided to became a Swami on the banks of Ganga IVC would have been discovered by the British. So he did not discover it it was the British in the form Sir John Marshall.

You can also put it this way: If Banerji had not discovered it, some other Bengali may have discovered it.

And do you think British would be bothered about Indian history? Really? All they (British) were interested in was in looting the subcontinent.

For instance:

In 1830, the British Governor of India, Lord William Bentinck, in the 1830s, thought of demolishing the Taj Mahal and auction off the marble to the landed English gentry of that time.

Even the demolition crew and machinery had entered the grounds and were ready to begin work but were only stopped because Bentinck was unable to make the scheme financially viable. Earlier auctions of marbles hadn’t succeeded, so it was felt that this would be useless.

Although some discard this story, yet Archaeological Survey of India still does believe that a sale by the British East India Company was planned under Lord Bentinck, which failed as no satisfactory buyers could be found. In any case, William Bentinck did auction off marble from the Agra Fort earlier to that, which may have led to this story – or attempt as well.

Imagine if earlier marble auction had succeeded? Taj would have been gone forever.

. . . .

Are you kidding? They had dozens of historians focus on the history of British India. Without them, places like IVC may have never been found.

Imagine if earlier marble auction had succeeded? Taj would have been gone forever.

And you guys would finally be able to put a temple in its place like you've always wanted!

Bet you it was BJP who found it
