DailyTech - Indonesia, India Consider BlackBerry Bans

Countries claim RIM could be handing information to terrorists or criminals

The UAE and Saudi Arabia have both banned services to Canadian Research in Motion's Blackberry citing security risks. The Saudi Arabia ban took effect today, while the UAE ban will roll out in October. Saudi Arabian officials complained, "This service might be used to serve terrorism."

Critics of the ban say that citizens have the right to privacy -- even from the government. At issue is the fact that RIM encrypts its communications so well, that it's hard to remotely gain access to it. This has frustrated government officials of certain countries in the Middle East and elsewhere.

Gatot Dewabroto, spokesman for the Ministry of Communication and Information in Indonesia, speaking with the Associated Press, today announced that his country was considering a ban on BlackBerry services. He comments, "We don't know whether data being sent through BlackBerrys can be intercepted or read by third parties outside the country."

Currently India is also considering a ban. That means that two of the largest developing nations may cut Blackberry access. Like the UAE and Saudi Arabia, they cite "security risks" -- which essentially short for their frustration that RIM doesn't want to help compromise its customers.

Responding in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Research In Motion Ltd. co-CEO Michael Lazaridis was unapologetic, blasting his company's critics. He remarked, "This is about the Internet. Everything on the Internet is encrypted. This is not a BlackBerry-only issue. If they can't deal with the Internet, they should shut it off."

RIM, based out of Waterloo, Ontario, finds itself in a precarious position with the bans. If it doesn't give in, it may lose global market share, at a time its already struggling to release competitive hardware amid hot products like the iPhone 4 and HTC EVO 4G Android smart phone. On the other hand, if it gives in to the foreign demands, it would likely seriously damage its strong reputation for security, which has helped it sell scores of smart phones to businesses around the world.

Still, Mr. Lazaridis is convinced he can negotiate other countries out of further service severances. He states, "We have dealt with this before. This will get resolved. And it will get resolved if there is a chance for rational discussion."

Mohammed Al Ghanem, director general of the U.A.E.'s telecom regulator, says the decision "to suspend certain BlackBerry services from October 11 is final," but adds, "We remain open to discussions in order that an acceptable, regulatory-compliant solution might be developed and applied."

Mr. Lazaridis clarifies that his company is happy to cooperate with court-ordered requests to intercept individuals communications. In these cases his company will hand them the encrypted stream, but will not help decrypt it, which he feels would be violating his customers' privacy. He states, "I would give them the encrypted stream. It would have to be like a wiretap."

He adds, "We are going to continue to work with them to make sure they understand the reality of the Internet. A lot of these people don't have Ph.Ds, and they don't have a degree in computer science."

Mr. Lazaridis also does not have a Ph.D in computer science. In fact he dropped out of college in 1979 to pursue entrepreneurial ventures, founding RIM in 1984. In 2000 he was awarded an honorary degree. While he might not have a Ph.D, he could hold his own with most computer science and computer engineering Ph.Ds, having filed for over 50 patents over his prolific career.

What do you guys think? I mean if India bans it, then its gonna be huge problem for the RIM?

Na. India is too big a market for RIM to lose, There will be negotiations and certain concessions from both sides, mostly from RIM.

That being said, I do find it ridiculous for GoI to start imposing such restrictions on the usage of blackberry. I still dont know the details of what all this issue is exactly about, but restrictions of such kind, I believe are counterproductive.

Well, the concerns outlined by the Government of UAE and Saudi Arabia are genuine. The Blackberry servers do encrypt data in transmission and it can be used by not only terrorists but people who are involved in organized crime/ mafia, which in case of South Asia is pretty rampant. RIM must work with the governments on what they want and let them have it. After all we expose ourselves daily online, by using credit cards, phone numbers, skype, facebook and google which no one says are secure in any way.

I suggest you ascertain the details before you make up your mind.

There is a major issue of a means of communication available without supervision. ..and yes, supervision is needed. Passage of information like transfer of money to the nation from outside does needs to be monitored. Mumbai has shown only one ' pehlu' or side of it - there are many more.

Yes, you are right, I think it should be banned in Pakistan too.

You guys are probably right.

What makes blackberry popular with businesses worldwide is the level of security they provide with their devices. However, there is always someone who wants to misuse this privilege and the agencies and authorities would want a check on such activities. Well, so be it.

But I still dont want my privacy to be infringed upon by some shady character working in a govt agency monitoring such data streams. Thats just me.

Point appreciated.

But you already are being monitored ! Even the posts we make here must be monitored ! The calls we make on the mobile network can & often are possibly being selectively monitored when there is reason for doubt.

The world over, states do keep an eye - even abnormal spending does not go unnoticed - in India PAN numbers help the state to know.

Of course I don't mind being monitored. What I am saying is I dont want some freak working for the govt. jerking off to pics the Mrs sends me of herself.

Has the US raised any security concerns regarding Blackberry data encryption?

I have never heard any such news.

Assuming RIM has shard the master key with the US government, then what problem does it have to share the same with another big customer, India?

You have no idea what the Patriot Act of 2001 is right?

It basically give the government, FBI, NSA , CIA and dozen other intelligence networks the capability and capacity to monitor any electronic/radio information they may desire, without warrant.

Passed by the none other than Mr Bush, it was meant to stop terrorists from communicating with methods such as email, cell phones and computers. Now they have taken it to just another level, and i am sure someone somewhere in USA has access to Blackberry data........secret, but should be known.

Even the Indian NTRO has the authority to monitor electronic/radio info without prior permission from civilian authorities and as and when they want but they certainly cant read encrypted info on that is carried by Blackberry without the master key.
And as you said the US agencies may secretly have access to the required key.

So thats the point -> If RIM can share with the US (which it has most probabaly), why cant it do with other countries?

There's nothing to prevent terrorists from communicating anonymously by cycling through various net cafe in a city or region. They can send encrypted data by normal email in a text file or something and then the other party runs decrypt software on it. You can even do it with general computing freeware. All you need is matrix operation.

An example of a real, short message I made would look like this:
