Indonesia, China agree to establish educational cooperation

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia and China have agreed to establish cooperation in the educational, social and cultural fields as part of efforts to enhance bilateral relations.

"Bilateral relations between Indonesia and China in the political, economic, social and cultural fields have grown rapidly," Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Puan Maharani said here on Wednesday.

Maharani made the remarks after leading the 1st High Level People-to-People Exchange Mechanism between Indonesia and China at the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture here.

She expressed the hope that through the meeting China will extend assistance to increase the capacity of research and technology through investment, technological transfer, scholarships, training and joint product development.

"More importantly, it will encourage the implementation of aerospace cooperation agreed upon during the Indonesian Presidents visit in China in March 2015," she said.

Both countries also have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the recognition of academic degrees and the qualification of higher education, she said.

Scientist exchange and joint research are also part of cooperation between the two nations, she said.

She further said Indonesia warmly welcomes Chinas plan to set up a cultural foundation in Indonesia. Likewise, the Chinese government should support the establishment of Indonesian cultural foundation in China.

"Both countries need to strengthen cultural cooperation. The cultural foundations play a pivotal role in promoting the two countries culture and improving mutual understanding between the two countries," she said.(*)

Indonesian president meets with Chinese vice premier

Indonesian President Joko Widodo met here with visiting Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong on Wednesday, and the leaders vowed to promote the people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.

Liu said that she is here for the first meeting of the cultural and people-to-people exchanges mechanism (PEM) between China and Indonesia at the vice premier's level and to implement the consensus reached by Chinese President Xi Jinping and President Joko Widodo.

"The PEM meeting will strengthen the bilateral cooperation on education, science, culture, health, media, youth and others and promote the cultural and people-to-people exchange in all fields," Liu said.

Liu hoped the cultural and people-to-people exchanges will further boost the China-Indonesia relations and promote the regional cooperation.

The PEM between China and Indonesia at the vice premier's level is the first such high level mechanism between China and a developing country.

Liu stated that China attaches great importance to the status and influence of Indonesia in ASEAN and is willing to dovetail China's "21st century maritime silk road" initiative with Indonesia's vision of "world maritime axis."

"China is ready to coordinate with Indonesia on international issues and promoting the development of China-Indonesia comprehensive strategic partnership as well as building the China- ASEAN community of common destiny," Liu concluded.

President Widodo said that China is Indonesia's strategic partner, adding he hoped the consensus reached with the leaders of the two countries could be implemented as soon as possible so as to benefit the two peoples.

"I hope the ministries and departments of the two countries could intensify communication, deepen cooperation on maritime, economy and trade, high speed train, tourism, among others, " Widodo said.

Liu arrived in Jakarta on Tuesday at the invitation of Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Puan Maharani. During her six-day visit, Liu is also expected to attend the cultural and people-to-people events in Indonesia's cities of Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bandung and Bali.

China to launch new TV channel in Indonesia next week

Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong will visit Indonesia to strengthen the strategic relationship between both countries, with Liu also attending the launch of the HI-Indo! television channel in Jakarta on May 28, the Chinese Embassy says.


Following fast-growing bilateral ties and personal rapport among the top leaders of China and Indonesia, Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong will visit Indonesia to strengthen the strategic relationship between both countries, with Liu also attending the launch of the HI-Indo! television channel in Jakarta on May 28, the Chinese Embassy says.

"Madam Liu will visit Indonesia in late May 2015 to launch the China-Indonesia High-Level People-to-People Exchange Mechanism," the Chinese Embassy in Jakarta said in a statement sent to The Jakarta Post.

Liu will be coming to Indonesia at the invitation of Indonesia's Coordinating Human Development and Culture Minister Puan Maharani, the embassy said.

The new TV channel, a joint product of the China International Television Corporation (CITVC) and PT Elnet Media Bersama, will be in Indonesian, a language spoken by over 250 million people.

"This channel is designed to provide China's TV programs in Bahasa Indonesia to the Indonesian audience," the embassy said.

Of late, major media companies have targeted Indonesia because of its size and large population.

Indonesia, the fourth most populous nation on the planet, is the largest economy in Southeast Asia. It is also home to the world's biggest Muslim population and a considerable amount of Chinese-Indonesians.

American news channel CNN has launched its Indonesian language website and numerous TV channels from South Korea and Japan have tried to attract Indonesian audiences through cable TV.

Meanwhile, the BBC and Voice of America already have their Indonesian sections and Al-Jazeera has opened a bureau in Jakarta.

Indonesians are well-known for their interest in TV programs, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other forms of social media.

Indonesia's first TV station, state-owned Televisi Republik Indonesia (TVRI), was launched in 1962. Until 1989, TVRI was dominant in the industry.

The government opened the doors to private TV companies in 1989 by granting a license to RCTI.

The industry enjoyed a big boost after the fall of then president Soeharto in 1998. TV stations mushroomed not only at the national level but also at the provincial level.

Today, there are around 100 TV channels, both at national and local level, in the country.
