JAKARTA, Indonesia — Indonesia will bid to host the 2032 Olympics following the success of the Asian Games held there over the past two weeks, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said in a surprise announcement Saturday that highlights the rising ambition of the giant but long underperforming Southeast Asian nation.

Jokowi, who is campaigning for a second term, made the announcement at a meeting in Bogor with the presidents of the International Olympic Committee and the Asian Olympic Committee.

“With the experience we have in organizing the 18th Asian Games, we are sure Indonesia can also host a bigger event,” Jokowi said in a statement after the meeting.

IOC President Thomas Bach welcomed the candidacy of Indonesia, the world’s fourth most populous nation, saying that the Asian Games provided a “strong foundation” for the country bid.

He said Indonesia has shown that it has all the ingredients to hold the Olympics successfully.

“You see that Indonesia is on the move. And you see the enthusiasm of the people,” Bach told The Associated Press. “It’s a very young country. This of course also makes it very interesting for the IOC.”

About 12,000 athletes from 45 nations and territories as well as several thousand officials and journalists took part in the Asian Games, which end Saturday. As host, Indonesia provided a spectacular opening ceremony and also exceeded its own expectations in winning 30 golds, placing fourth on the medal table.

Indonesia, projected to be among the world’s 10 biggest economies by 2030, used the games to shift perceptions that it’s in the “too hard” basket, paving the way for a tilt at even bigger sports hosting baubles.

The country’s hosting of the Asian Games without major organizational hitches has been a boost for Jokowi as he heads to elections in April. With the 2032 bid announcement, he gets to extend the shelf life of the Asian Games afterglow.

Bach said the formal selection process for 2032 hasn’t begun but Germany and India have also expressed interest.

“And we have heard from other continents and other cities,” he said. “Given that the decision will most likely be taken in 2025, you can understand that we are already very happy at this stage to have such an interest.”

Tokyo is hosting the 2020 Olympics. Paris and Los Angeles have already been selected to host the following two games, in 2024 and 2028, respectively.

Massive problems with the 2016 Olympics in Brazil, a developing country with endemic corruption, may count against Indonesia’s chances. It cost Brazil about $20 billion to host the Olympics, a bill that is likely to raise objections in Indonesia, where poverty remains widespread.

Great I wish Indonesia the best of success, if RIO could get it then then its possible for many others.

Thank @waz , I guess they will use existing facility in Jakarta and Palembang for Olympic. There will be not much money to be poured for facility infrastructure. What is needed the most is athlete preparation then. But I think Germany will win the bid though.

There will be a new stadium in Jakarta inshaALLAH in 2020, it will add existing facility for football match

You will need further infrastructure for transporting athletes as Jakarta suffers from transport issues, but that will be a good thing i.e. killing two birds with one stone. How would the people feel about it? I think Indonesians would be happy as long as the costs don't spiral out of control.

Yup, under Joko Widodo leadership we are building many infrastructure project, including LRT (Light Rapid Tra
nsit) and MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) in Jakarta. And you are right @waz, if the costs are controllable the public will support it.

Here you can see the project progress, we hope that if the project completed Jakarta people will use public transportation rather than cars and motor cycles

I don't think indonesians will reject that idea, being able to held such event is a proud achievement, but i don't think that the opposition will let it slide smoothly (whoever that will be come opposition in the future)

Best of luck on the Olympic bid, and congrats on a successful Asian Games

P.S. If Indonesia were to win, I think it would be the 1st Muslim majority nation to host the Olympics

.
Great, wish the bid success. I heard Shanghai also apply for 2032 Olympics, But I support Indonesia to win. Best wishes.

Thank buddy. Wow, I dont know Shanghai will compete as well. It will be difficult for us to win the bid. India, Germany, and China will be our tough rival. Personally I dont think that Indonesia could win, but maybe we can use Muslim card to win a bid.

Thanks bro. Yes, Indonesia should play Muslim card on the bid. Your Prime Minister if I am not mistaken was coming to the Asian Games opening ceremony. Our relationship is getting stronger with KFX/IFX program and all of South Korea investment in Indonesia.

Jakarta Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system

TransJakarta (stylised as transjakarta) is a bus rapid transit (BRT) system in Jakarta, Indonesia. It was the first BRT system in Southern and Southeast Asia. TransJakarta commenced operations on 15 January 2004 with the aim of providing a fast public transport system to help reduce rush hour traffic. The buses run in dedicated lanes and ticket prices are subsidized by the regional government.

In 2011, the system achieved a yearly performance record, with buses carrying 114.7 million passengers. However, passenger numbers declined to 111.6 million in 2014 and 102.95 million in 2015. In 2016, a new record of 123.73 million passengers was achieved.[5][6] In 2017, about 188.9 million passengers used the service of TransJakarta[7]. The fare has remained Rp 3,500 (27 US cents) per passenger since operations began.[8]

TransJakarta articulated buses at Harmoni Central Busway

As of 2017, TransJakarta has the world's longest BRT system (230.9 km in length),[4] with 13 primary routes and 10 cross-corridor routes.[1] In 2017, the newest corridor opened. It is the first elevated corridor on the TransJakarta network.[9] Two more corridors are in the planning stages. TransJakarta had a total of 128 routes as of April, 2018 (corridor, cross route & feeder route) - a significant increase from 41 routes in 2015. TransJakarta has targeted to serve one million passengers per day by the end of 2018. [10] In addition, there are 18 'feeder' routes that serve beyond the exclusive busway corridors. Located in the municipalities surrounding Jakarta, the feeder service uses special buses that allow for boarding at either ground level or the TransJakarta station platforms. The number of TransJakarta buses has also increased dramatically, from 605 buses in 2015 to 1,056 in 2016.[11] At the beginning of 2017, TransJakarta owned 1,500 buses with plans to double that number to 3,000 by the end of the year.[12]

KA Commuter line is a commuter rail system for Jakarta Metropolitan Area in Indonesia. Commonly known as Commuter line or KRL synonym (Indonesian: Kereta Rel Listrik) for Electric multiple unit (EMU). Jabodetabek refers to Jakarta metropolitan area, which is formed by combining the first syllables of Jakarta, Bogor, DeAzad Kashmir, (Greater) Tangerang and Bekasi, which also represent Commuter line's operational area. Though at present the service extended beyond Jabodetabek to Rangkasbitung in Banten and Cikarang in Bekasi Regency.

It is operated by PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia (KCI), a subsidiary of the Indonesian national railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI). The name of the operator changed to PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia (KCI) from previous PT KAI Commuter Jabodetabek (KCJ) since 19 September 2017.[6]
